Brain FART alert. Use a chain breaker!! I think this would solve the problem. I have one but my camera needs batteries so if someone else could post pics? If not I will get pics posted shortly.

      Flat is good

      Hi Lunatic,

I'm sorta spaced challenged now a days and don't have all tools I had in my shop.
I still have a quality drill press tho.

Made the new post using my drill press as a lathe,
then used this to "mill the stuff flat".

      tpped for #6/32 screw
After checking fit, epoxied the threds and installed.
Takes more time getting set up, checking it, then checking it agin than anyhing else.

        Very dangerous!

Never, ever use an end or side mill in a drill press chuck! That is one of the first lessons taught in machining. The shank on a mill cutter is harder that the chuck jaws so you can't get a proper grip on it.

I bought my bike with a repaired broken post. I didn't know it until I had a fire. The repair eventually failed. I have replaced the body with one from a XS650. I haven't got it working right yet, but ultimately, I expect it will be a good fix.

IF this were to happen to me, I would put a thin layer of metal epoxy on the broken off piece to hold it in place, then drill through the end of the post similar to the pictures of the drill press (which was turned into a mill not a lathe, but that's another show) and then thread the hole. I would then drive a long setscrew in the thread with some red loctite to complete the repair. It would have to be something small like a 2 or 3 mm setscrew, but it would work well.

Also, while you have your float pins out, its perfectly ok to work on the posts' holes a bit so the pin slides in and out with very little resistance, the bowl is made in such a way that it will retain the pin.

              Hey. Lee...

Hope you get 'em fixed or sold soon.

How much ya want for 'em the way they are? They're XJ carbs, right?

              Let me know.

Just wanted to also say the backrest arrived yesterday safe & sound!
              Thanks so much!

Man... postage on that one was pretty steep! (That thing's heavy!)

Sorry to see it cost you so much to mail it. Feel bad.

Maybe we can work something out on those carbs...

Pretty good shape other than that and a good cleaning, or are there other issues? Be nice to have a good, spare rack on hand...

                I will be missed?

'I will be missed' Ivan? Where am I going?
Am I getting booted from the forum for breaking the carb float mount off?

As for their general condition, XJOK2PLAY, I inspected the diaphragms to maek sur ethey wre not torn. They are fine. The carbs are all gunky from sitting with fuel in the,. Anti-tamper caps are still in place even. Will need a THOROUGH cleaning, and there is that broken riser, of course.
Drop me an email if you want them as a parts set. We'll work out a deal.

No, that is my sig. It is in reference to Lee aka Trainzz who passed away in October, during the ride I was on. Sorry for the confusion.

My name is Lee also, so it confused me.
Not that it takes a lot to confuse me.

I fixed one on my last set of carbs like this.

Drilled a small hole about 1/4" blow the pin at 90 degrees to the pin. Used some fine mechanics wire to loop around it and twisted it tight, twist headed down for clearance.

There was enough of the original hole left to make a good saddle for the pin.

I ran like this for months until I got another bank of carbs and rebuilt them.

                      It's still holding great.

Sorry about the blurry pics. Camera phone.

Some of us have limited resources and have to "make do".

Never, ever use an end or side mill in a drill press chuck! That is one of the first lessons taught in machining.
                          Surprise … I’m not a machinist.
And I’ve accomplished and repaired a few things over the years that I’ve been told were not “doable” or that required this or that particular tool or device. Don't get me wrong, I respect professionals in all fields and use/consult them when needed but in this particular instance it cost me little and if it did not work out I would have been no worse off than before I started and I would have learned nothing (like my press could not do what it did? ). For a paying customer they would receive nothing but a professional job, but on occasion I do things like the above for myself utilizing what I have. That repair cost me $0.17 above what I had on hand and will last as long as the bike.

                          Works for me …

Kudos, Mike. I am also in the "do it myself with whatever I've got on hand" club. Would I love to have a fully-equipped machine shop? Sure. I'd also like a fully equipped wood shop ala Norm Abram. But then, for the space I'd need, i couldn't make the mortgage!

I'm glad it worked out MRO,

However if you have seen some of the industrial accidents I have you would count yourself very fortunate. That particular operation is a very high gamble with your eyes. I understand limited resources, etc., but when cutting tools shatter there is an enormous amount of force expended. I have seen a part go thru a concrete block wall. I would just as soon take a whippin as to have to take someone to the hospital. Play safe so maybe one day we will ride.

Ahhh yes....that guy was pretty "bright" !!!! Imagine how dark this world would be without him!!! Or how bumpy our rides would be without vulcanization!!!

IMHO, if it cant be fixed with duct tape, baling wire, hammer and a damn good screwdriver, it cant be fixed (minus the stuff that requires more than that!!! )..oh...and of course some beverages
