Rear Wheel Centerline Knowledge

I have heard conflicting info about the rear wheel centerline in relation to the left inner and right inner frame/swingarm points. Before I started all the modding to a stock 79F Bike, I got a 5.625" from the left side to rear wheel center. I do recall this was with the 16" wheel swap. I never mic'd the 17" wheel for reference, but wouldn't think there was much difference there.


This could have been off by a few mm's but the nice thing about the XS11 is the adjustable swingarm pivot bolts that I incorporated into the swingarm swap.
I just want some GURUs to chime in with real world knowledge here before I mod up a different swingarm. Thanks....Rob

I thought you were doing a Vmax chain drive? How many irons in the fire does a guy need? I did go by and look at an '06 Vmax today. They asked me if I wanted to test ride it.. thought about it.. and knew I'd go try to see how fast it'd go and decided I better not. lol.

Just had the swingarm out yesterday. I wish you would have hit me up a day earlier.

I am working on that too.
According to old member PGGG, the XS rear wheel centerline is exactly in between the inner pivots (exactly 1/2 the swingarm pivot tube)
I am modding another swingarm for some other member here and wanted to get a consensus on this measurement. The original 79F swingarm I measured was 11.75" across (5.875 centerline)....But when I mic'd everything out, the 16" rear wheel center in relation to the left swingarm pivot side was 5.625 (1/8" from being centered between the frame pivots.
Even if the 16" rear wheel swap threw me off, 1/8" can be adjusted back at the pivot bolts.

Screw the chain, go with a belt drive.

Come on, you loose power with the shaft and the chain is just messy, belt drive with a tensioner is a must.

I am redesigning the ZRX11 swingarm pivot bolts to incorporate the ZRX bearing seal and be 2 piece. I have a new 24" slide Micrometer that doesn't tell lies. I will eventually build a Belt driven Vmax.....hehe

What are you planning on using for a belt? I know on the Harleys if you get much above 100 rwhp belt breakage can be a problem, particularly if you go drag racing. These guys almost all convert to chain....

5th post up.....But I will be offering a chaindrive setup for the Max. The case has to be split one time because the outer right bevel gear has to be removed and it doesn't just slide out of the casing.

I can take some measurements off of a parts bike I have. It is an XJ with the 16" rim, (Same swingarm) but not sure how you want to get an exact measurement of the wheel. I can tie off some string to the back side of the tire and move it in until it touches the front side.. then mark that on the swing arm.. then do it again for the other side of the tire. Then I can mark halfway on the swingarm between those two marks an d measure to the outside of the swingarm pivots.

This will tell you where the TIRE lines up, but not sure how to get an exact wheel measurement. All my rims have tires on them. Also, the XJ rims are different designed and don't know if there's a difference between them and the XS rims, but I do know that everything interchanges between the two. I also know that there are different thicknesses of spacers between some of the XS models on the axle on the right (Brake) side between the swingarm and rim, but may only be because of a difference in the brake bracket that holds the caliper.

Hey Tod, it is best to measure with swingarm and bare wheel installed, but if it can be lined against the part of the installed tire that has no lettering then it will be close enough. I appreciate it. When I am done, I will post up the diagrams for anyone wanting to install the swingarm themselves. 1 of the stock XS11 swingarm pivot bolts has to be trimmed down as well on the left side, I will also post the detail when I'm finished.....CHOP

You never have really said what this is for? Are you trying to make something that can use the shaft and a bigger back tire?
