For those who mount their own tires

I really didnt intend this thread to go this way. And I know long time users of a forum get tired of the same old debates but thats the way it works everywhere.

Now as to does this work, People who cant see it working you will never convince. Even though almost every big rig on the road uses it. If it works on superswamper tires ( infamaous for balancing issues) then it works, period. I have never tried it on a bike and BB's or airsoft pellets cost alot less.

I guess I will try it when I can afford new tires, but maybe I wont bring it back up when I do.

Doesn't their web site say it doesn't work well on "wide" tires? Maybe I made that up, its been a while since I checked out their site, I found it was cheaper to balance them the old fashioned way.

Skipping and Singing Songs!

I didn't know you liked to skip and sing songs.
But I digress, I put them the Beads in and they smoothed out the high speed ride. I don't know if the wheels were balanced properly before, But THEY WORKED.
Now what songs do you like to sing and where is all this skipping going on?

Dont let me stop you! No, its just that a few want to say, that has been discussed before.End of discussion, Others want to say it doesnt work period with no experience just because they cant wrap their minds around it. Being new here I just hate to rock the boat.

I can tell you it works on big truck tires, period. I dont know if it works on motorcycle tires, but why wouldnt it? I really just didnt want to pay a shop to mount my tires but neither did I want to have to take them somewhere to be balanced if I did it. So was curious what others did.

Yes, it was an elementary requirement, Im sure with your talents you could fabricate a stand quite easily. Shoot I made one with just a few pieces of wood once!

I guess I'm lazy. I want one with the cones to lock the wheel in and the arms with the pointers. Maybe one day I'll weld one up if I can get or machine up the cones too...

Centrifugal force acts more on the heavy side of the wheel, pulling the heavier side farther from the center of rotation, not closer to.

Sorry Ivan You are absolutely correct, but the centre of rotation is not the same as the centre of gravity, and the heaviest spot will always be closer to the centre of gravity.

The misunderstanding comes from assuming the wheel can have a center of rotation other than that of the axle. The center of rotation is fixed at the axle

Once again, Correct but in an out of balance wheel the centre of gravity does not match the centre of rotation, and rotates around the centre of rotation causing the imbalance and vibration. When people sometimes ask why I ride a 30 year old Japper I often answer with "For those who understand no explanation is needed, for those who don't understand no explanation is possible" I guess this is the same thing

Gravity is not the prevaling force here. If the tire is not going to be spinning it would. The term "center of gravity" describes force attributed to mass and is still not understood. On the other hand centrifugal force is fully understood and explanations are simple.
We are dealing with a multiple cause vibration when referring to "out of balance tires. There exists two seperate forms of "balance" often applied to spinning objects. The first is static balancing which several ways to address have been covered in this thread. The second is harmonic. The beads would dampen (as stated previously) vibration. This is not a true balance in reference to gravity or centrifugal force but rather an inhibitor that allows RPM to continue to increase. The dampening effect would in all likelyhood transform into less tire wear expecially on high pressure tires. The higher pressure promotes vibration. Nonetheless an out of balance or out of round tire will be pushed further out by the addition of the beads. That being said the best material for this use would be round lead split fishing weights.

I would suggest that more reading is required... However you may want to disprove the theory, the fact is that in practice it works.
