eleven special welder bike

this forum has been a big help when rebuilding my xs. i am getting ready to finish my xs, hopefully in the next week and i am pumped. i wanted to get it on the road before the end of summer and before my wedding in september. i think it is finally going to happen.

i wanted to post up the pictures of the build just to help out any one else and to show off my bike!

the day i bought it. i think the person rolled the bike in a field. there was a ton of mud and cow crap all over the bike.




this is what i was going for. we stripped it down and started brainstorming.



i wanted to lower the bike but i didn't want ot spend the money on new shocks. i took them apart and cut the springs. they are about 10.5" from bolt to bolt.




the same thing for the gas tank, i didn't want to spend the money on a replacement tank or fab up new mounts for a different tank. it was pretty dented but it didn't leak anywhere. so i added a ton of putty and sanded a lot! this tank was dented everywhere, it's amazing the guy survived the crash!








this is a crappy pic: i filled in the tail light holes on the stock rear fender to give it a smooth or shaved look. i just plug welded the holes and used putty to smooth out the grind marks.

this is the bike at 99% finished. i have to hook up the gas lines, get the blinkers healdight working, and change the fluids.
the kick stand thing will also be takin off. i am going to keep it for when i work on the bike, but for now i think it is too bulky.

Awesome work you've done to the bike. You'll have to post a video of it running and what it sounds like. The exhaust is interesting. It sure looks good.

i am very worried about the exhaust. it was pretty loud with the kerker muffler, i am sure it will be loud with no muffler. i just liked the look without the muffler on the side. most bikes have something hanging off the side, so i thought it was a bit different. maybe i can make a real muffler under the bike if it's too loud.


the orig bars were pretty bent up and i wanted to get the same size. unfortunately the 11" bars were had to find in that size so i just went with a 12" ape hanger bar from ebay. the chrome was VERY bad on the ebay bars, but they were pretty cheap in price.

Man you've done a fantastic job making this bike unique!!!!! I acquired two 79 specials recently for free and am in the process of complete rebuilds. One is stock and the other I plan on "bobbing" and you've just given me some great ideas to work from.....

that's a remarkable fix-up on the sad & sorry dented wreck you started with.
To my mind there's a way to improve the look of your rear light set up.
Remove the big stop/tail above the licence plate holder and replace it with a tiny white one just to illuminate the licence plate as the law requires.
Do those red rear signal lights have double filament bulbs? If not, change the bulb sockets to take double filament bulbs.
Get a separate signal light to combined signal/stop light trailer adapter (~$20 from NAPA) and re-wire those two red signal lights to be stop/signal/tail lights.

You may be surprised how much noise that baffle in the pipe deals with. centre stand is only really useful for removing wheels, side stand is plenty with shaft. Dont know how comfy that mini seat will be, let us know how you go after a couple hundred miles.

i would like to get something smaller for the rear tail light or do exactly what you stated by removing the big light. right now i am having trouble getting the turn signals to blink. they work on the hazard switch but only stay on with the turn signal switch. i am pretty sire they are single filament bulbs and sealed inside the red plastic cover. i am going to mess with it today.

i am not sure what type the rear tire is but i know it's the stock size and dunlop brand, the local bike shop had a sale on tires and that's the tire they had for me. i know it was only $95.
