  • still trouble elec. problem ? pickup coil

    thanks for all the thoughts. Still not running right. In idle runs great and low gear runs good but in higher gears starts loosing power. I have soloid the broken wire ohm on the pick up coil went from 610ohm to 720ohm. I have measured the volt on wires orange and gray got 12vdc. I replaced the coils and spark plugs because the reading where 25k on the spark plug wires 1 @ 4 and 2 @ 3where all over the place. Have more power but I am still find after 30min ride the exhust pipe on 1 @ 4 still warm to the touch and now it's started to back firing . thanks max

    Hey Max,

    Did you mean to say you SOLVED the PU coil problem?? IF so, then along with NEW ignition/spark plug wires/plugs, that eliminates those possibilities!

    Don't recall if you've done any work on the carbs, any intake/exhaust mods, what the jetting is?? Also, could be a bad solder joint on the TCI, just ask BNE who had his recently fixed by Randy...see his website and diagnostics from his username profile!

      Still trouble with elec. problem?

      Hi T.C.
      No still question the best way to check the pick up coil. I have the ohm that you guy and the manual say but still have cold exhust pipe 1&4. Could the TCI be bad to cause the problems I'm having with the 1&4. Thanks max

        Hey Max,

        You have to pull on the wires under the timing cover. Often there are a few strands that are making contact, but they have broken completely in two. The insulation keeps them together, but as the timing plate rotates from the vac. adv. and cent. adv. processes, the wires flex, and separates the broken wires, which prevents signals going to the TCI which in turn doesn't signal the coil and you get cold pipes and very poor performance....a 550 instead of an 1100!

        But yes, the TCI with bad solder joints can also cause same problems, but so can a bad ignition coil! BNE/MadMaxim had a bad TCI joint that dropped out his 2-3 cylinders, and after RANDY resoldered it, worked like a charm!

        See the tech tips on fixing the PU coil wires, tells you about testing ie. PULLING on the wires to see if the insulation hourglasses!

          I seem to remember

          I don't recall the wire colors but maybe someone more worthy can chime in , but if you pull the small plug out of the tci and check them with your multi meter that can tell you if your pick up coils are not working. Anyone??

            Pickup Coil Connector Wire Colors

            Here you go:

            #1 pickup
            White/Red --> White/Green 720 Ohms

            #2 pickup
            Yellow/Red --> Yellow/Green 720 Ohms

            Regards,

            Scott (still not worthy though.... )

              I have checked the PU coils with a very low tech method. Remove the left side cover. Start the bike and carefully give the coils a tug. When I have had a problem with mine it was always as I picked uped RPM's. It always idled correctly. When you tug on the bad wire the bike will start to miss and or run rough. Another area to check is where the "bendy" PU coil wires attach to the rest of the wiring harness. They can come apart there. Even on a brand new NOS harness. DAMHIK!

                thanks for help on the pick-up coil

                thank you for all the help I have the bike running thanks to you guys. turned out to the TCI box. So I have used the gm ign. replacement but Idle seem to idle fast. What is normal settings for idle on rpms and do you adjust the idle speed knob when bike is warm up. I have also replaced the coils with the newer up grade. thanks again.

                  Yes, adjust idle when fully warm. Should be around 1k rpms.
                  I think I have a loose screw behind the handlebars.
