    here let me help u out on what a special should look like mine is also a early build date. one thing u must remember bikes r made very differently. they r made starting alot around june or july for new bikes.

        The numbers on the gas cap lock ARE the code for the keys. You can have a locksmith or a Yamaha dealeer make you a key from that. I would FIRST try any key you have, as the PO may have "fixed" the lock so it will open with any key.

          Thanks for the video. It gives me a better view of a special.

          I have tried all the keys I have so far with no luck. I'll take the tank to a lock smith unless I can pick it first.
          I'm waiting for Andreas to see if he has a good carb slide first. Need to get it running before I move on too far.

            I had a MNS tank with no key and went to the local locksmith with tank in hand. 5 minutes later I walked out with a correct key.
            He had a computer link for all the codes and just sent the code to the cutter, locked in a blank and fired it up. Never seen anything easier.

            Unless you have nothing but time?... For me I wouldn't even mess with it.

            Trying to get it open yourself might just bugger the lock.
