  • Need help with ID of my XS1100

Hello everyone. I need help with the identification of the XS1100 midnight special I have. The ID plate says it was built in 7-79 but the paperwork says it is a 1980. If I can get the pictures to post here you will see that it looks like the previous owner may have changed the tank out for the larger tank. It is cutting into the front reflectors bolted on to the frame. That' s what makes me think it has been changed out. I think it should have the smaller tank.
I have the carbs all apart and sonic cleaned ready to reassemble. But one of the diaphragms has a hole in it. Looks like it had an internal fire because the plastic is partially melted. There is a new one on Ebay but I don't know for sure if it will work. I have not had the engine running yet but it spins over just fine with the starter. I'm sure there will be other issues to address along the way, but if I'm going to restore this bike for sale I need to know that it runs fine first.

If anyone in the area of Sacramento Calif. is interested in the bike or helping figure out what I'm dealing with I would welcome the help. I'm not new to restoring old bikes but the XS1100 IS new to me. Any help, tips, or issues to look out for would be a great insite so I can restore this to it's proper glory.
    Larry

Please let me know if I did the picture links wrong. I tried a few different ways. Hope one of them works. I'm used to dragging the picture to the post to make it visible.

    Well ...

judging by the fork legs, exhaust, reflector pattern it appears to be a Special, alright ..... but .. the tank and bars are standard. The brake rotors are 80 or later .... also it doesn't appear to be a Midnight since it doesn't have a black/gold theme. Bike is definately a hybrid ... IMHO the best of both Standard and Special. Below is a list of US model Vin numbers:

My best guestimate is a 1980 special. The grab bar is defintiely 80 or 81 along with the tail light position. What numbers are on the TCI, if it starts with 4RO it is an 81. Everything but the tank screams Special.

The serial # on the tag is 3J6 001590. Seems like a low production # in the series.

Now my question is will this carb slide work for me.

        http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...K%3AMEWAX%3AIT

At the end of my slide I have the letter A stamped in it. Will the ebay one work for me?
I only need one. It looks like it caught on fire at some point.

Are there any issues that this bike needs me to attend to that were an inherent problem with them? I want to get it running solid before I sell it.

If anyone is interested in it let me know. The less I do the better the price at this point.

Does anyone have a picture of what this should look like in stock form?

I may be in the market for a gas tank too. If anyone has what should be on the bike originally.

Yep, 80 special is what she seems to be. The tank was transplanted. Do you have the seat? Seat may have been modified to fit with the stardard tank as they are bigger than the special tank.

I have 2 different seats for it. Both are in terrible shape though. Good thing I have my own upholstery sewing machine. Either one will need new covers. One is a cruiser seat with the wide sides. The other looks stock. I'll have to measure the difference.
Thanks for helping me out. I really appreciate it.

I need a carb slide diaphragm. How many different years and models will work with my set of carbs?

1980 and newer should be the same. The '78 and '79 machines had an "older" style that is no longer available. Go to georgefix on ebay, as he is very good and fair priced. I've used him many times for carb, fuel, and brake parts. His kits always seem to fit.

The correct seat will need to match up to the side covers to look right IMHO.

The SG (Special) seat will be more pointed in the front to fit the rear side the teardrop shaped SG tank. The Standard tank you show in the pic will be much wider at the point where it meets a Special seat. While the Standard seat will match up to the tank; it won't match up to the Special side covers ... Standard side covers aren't really an option ... does this make any sense? Makes tank and seat exchanging between Standard and Special problematic .... not to say that it can't or hasn't been done.

Here's a couple of quick ways to tell which carbs, LR

If you look at the outside of the carb body, the late carbs have the idle mix screw sitting more vertically kinda' inside a little recess. The early carbs have the mixture screws set on an angle on the side of the body with a visible spring underneath.

Internally, if the needle and seat screws in, it's early. If pressed in, it's late.

Here is a couple pictures to identify the carbs and seat. The seat is narrower than the tank. Now the question is, will that new slide I posted above work?
And does anyone have a tank for a special?

                          Hey there,

Okay, from the photos of your carbs, it appears that you do have the later 80-81 series carbs, and that slide is the one for that series carb, and good price. The seller is the family/friends of BOB JONES, recently deceased and owner/guru of Merriam Cycles, website no longer up! See memorial section about Bob Jones. New prices for other aftermarket equivalent are selling for ~$64.95 for ONE!

The Special Tanks are more stylish IMHO, but they are smaller in capacity than the Standards, and many members actually look for Standard tanks to receive in trade for their smaller specials. The petcocks and fuel sending units are different, but unless your PO did some major rewiring, then putting the special tank back on should be fairly easy.

Best to post in the Parts for Sale Forum, there's sections for PARTS WANTED/TRADE there as well!! Also, could try contacting Andreas Weiss, he may also have one!?

And that seat is a late Special seat that matches your grab rail, bet you can find a Special tank to match too, in fact, here's one on Ebay right now, .... http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Gas-T...A1%7C72%3A1171.... Hopefully you got the plastic side covers with the bike too.

Thanks TC for the info and advice. I'm going to try to buy the slide but I'll be at work when the bid ends. I hope I get it. It's all I need to get the carb's done to see if the bike even runs.

I do have the side covers for the bike. I have to fix one of the tabs but that's not a problem with PlastiFix.
I'm going to hold off on buying a tank until I get the bike running right first.

I read up on all the carb related post here and saw that the main jets in the carb's should be 120 and 115 on (I think) the outside carb's. Mine had 120's in all of them. Is that going to be a problem?

I got a PM from Adrea about part's available. I do intend to get some stuff from him after I get the bike running and rolling.

Are there any special issues that I should look for while rebuilding the bike?
