  • Oil Cooler adapter installation

I have an oil cooler for my bike that makes use of an adapter disc that goes between the oil filter bowl and the engine. The hoses come off the front of this 1 inch alloy disc. It gets attached with a steel bolt that the oil filter bowl bolt will thread into. This may even by a factory setup. I don't know.
Question, I am guessing that the adapter disc bolt should only be torqued as much as the filter bolt so what prevents both the adapter bolt and filter bowl bolt form coming out together during filter changes?
Should I perhaps be using lock tight on the adapter bolt?

IIRC, we put RED locktight on the adapter bolts to try and keep them in the bike.

OK, so red lock tight it is on that bolt.
Any reason why I can't or shouldn't install a heat activated flow valve with this cooler set up?

            Hey Rob,

Maximan installed a B&M cooler and used their 180 degree thermostat,

See this page for photo, and PDF installation instructions.
            http://www.bmracing.com/PRODUCTS/Coo...-Control-Valve

It provides a bypass function until the oil gets to temp, then routes it thru the cooler. A bit pricey. Also, depending on what type of hoses and fittings you have, will probably need to use some form of adapters!?

The valve I have is from a Lockhart oil cooler that was damaged when the bike fell over. I will hook it up down low where there's lots of space for it.
              Thanks for the input guys

You might want to mount up as high as possible, it's not something you would want to get hit by a piece of gravel thrown up by your front tire. Those two mounting holes for the fairing mounts on the frame uprights is a good mounting point.

It will be above the lower edge of the fender but not high enough to get in the way of cam chain adjustments. There's not really a lot of room there given that the cooler supply hoses need to be away from the headers.

OH, the cooler itself, yes it is right up at the top. The valve will be down lower

On these adapter disc's which holes are considered to be OUT to the cooler and IN from the cooler. There are 2 holes in the disc. 1 into the filter bowls space and one into the new chamber that is above the disc when its installed.

                            Rob,

The hole that goes into the filter bowl will be the IN from the cooler, the other hole will be the OUT to the cooler. The plate sends the oil out to the cooler first, then comes back into the plate, then down into the filter cup and eventually up into the engine.
