They are both the same Rake = 29.5 degrees. As DiverRay mantioned, the only difference is the trees, which change the Trail between the Standards and Specials.1980 XS850SG - Sold

Was thinking about putting a special front end on a standard to get a longer wheelbase, get in trouble when i sit around and think to much, lol1979 xs1100 f

Hi Bob, Ray, 'Bug,
Let's be clear about this whole thing.
Specials and Standards have identical 29.5º rake and 5.12" trail.
They are cosmetically different in that the Standard carries it's front axle at the bottom of the fork sliders
while the Special carries it's front axle on the front of the fork sliders and has shorter 'trees to keep the trail the same as a Standard.
If you swap in Standard 'trees on a Special yes you will get a longer wheelbase.
You will also get less trail and hence, lighter steering.
XS11 sidecar operators like myself and others have made this swap to lighten our rigs' steering.
Making the swap on a solo will of course lighten it's steering also.
Which can be OK if you are expecting it but perhaps not if you ain't.Fred Hill, S'toon

Just going for the look, use to ride them ol choppers years ago, cant be any worse than that, besides i think a little longer wheel base rides better, just thinking out loud, never know what i will do, lol

yeah, you can swap in a Special's entire front forks and fender (the fenders look the same but they bolt up different) onto your Standard to get the longer look but you will be stuck with the Special's Weird Harold front brakes.
Doing this will not change the wheelbase or alter the steering apart from whatever handling changes that may be caused by the differences in the fork internals.
Keeping the Standard 'trees while you do this will give about 1½" longer wheelbase and also quicken the steering.Last edited by fredintoon; 05-12-2009, 08:34 AM.Fred Hill, S'toon
