Low speed speedo ???

Forgive me for being a little niave, but can someone explain the logic of having a speedo that only shows 85mph on a machine that can do that in second gear. I wasnt aware that you guys stateside had that limitation and cant for the life of me understand why.

Seems dumb to me. Does someone seriously expect that riders will stay below that simply because the speedo only shows that, or are you stuck with some kind of speed/rev limiters as well?

I only discovered it because I'm searching for a replacement for mine which which reads 220 kmh/140mph and will quite happily achieve this when i'm in the mood (weather, road and god willing)

We here in the states simply say "Thank you, ex-president Jimmy Carter."
That was also during the time when we had the wonderful National 55 mph speed limits, too. Hard to believe this mentality once ruled our nation.

It just makes it so those that get caught traveling at such rediculous speeds can tell the judge, "I couldn't have been going that fast - my spedometer said I was only going 85!"

And with that said it really sucks to find a speedo that shows 160 and then your self canceling turn signals don't work if you try to use that one. I have both my original and the 160 mph one and I swap them in and out depending on where I am riding. I have the 85mph one around town because it self cancels my turn signals.

By the way I agree it was one of the dumbest things ever done.

I was told one time by a law enforcement type person that's exactly why the 85mph spedos only lasted a few years....

I have both my original and the 160 mph one and I swap them in and out depending on where I am riding. I have the 85mph one around town because it self cancels my turn signals.

If you feel like digging into your 160mph speedo, the reed switch can be replaced to restore the self cancelling turn signal feature. Maybe an electronics guru might chime in with a source for the correct one.

I'd given up looking for a 160 speedo. They are to dang expensive. I see them on ebay sell well over a 100. Doesn't really bother me as it's for my brothers bike.

Besides that I don't get into driving fast anymore. To many cage's with stupid drivers in them.

Cajun- It's been a long time since I had one tore apart and I don't know if it can be done but have you ever givin any thought about taking apart the 2 speedo's and putting in the self canceling feature. Might be able to be done. If I ever get my hands on one I'd be more then willing to try it.

160 speedo isn't all it's cracked up to be. When I'm reading 92 mph my friend (on a 2007 919) reads 100 and maxed out I only get to 120 and he's at 140, so probably corrected to 135 mph.

Looking at the pictures in this thread, it appears the reed switch can be replaced without tearing the whole speedo apart.

They both should cancel your turn signals. Your 160 model must have a problem with the reed switch.

You don't have to tear them apart. The reed switch is on the outside.

Okay, what I got out of this is that it was an overreaction of a peanut farmer in a feeble attempt to reduce speed limits and possibly conserve fuel !!??

Around that time over here we had stupid stuff like carless days and mandatory car pooling, and 50mph limits. Fuel was 2 bucks a gallon then whereas now its almost 2 bucks a litre.

These days we'd just melt down the peanuts and turn the oil into biofuel and leave the speed limits alone.

the part about those politically correct speedometers that makes me laugh is the caution zone starting at 55....cars of the day were plagued with the same restriction.
