But if not, does your WOF inspection requirements not take into account that you need to upkeep your machine by replacing parts? Is it really expected that you trash any vehicle once a speedo gives up completely? Maybe I am misreading or interpreting this.
Thats correct in that will I never find another speedo with the same mileage, kilometres in this case, but it is possible to tweak the odometer reading of a replacement to reflect the damaged one and not arouse interest from the man. It is also possible to replace parts but they must be the same as the removed/oem items to pass.

If modified or non oem parts not fitted to vehicles supplied into our market are used (i.e. a speedo in mph) then the bike must be submitted to an approved testing station for re-inspection and certification which is hugely expensive and time consuming, and to be avoided if at all possible.

Changing speedo's with differing odometer readings is an even bigger can of worms with all sorts of paperwork and declarations required to get it passed. And this is compounded by the fact that we use Km/h rather than mph.

It's not impossible, just bloody hard.

I'm pretty certain I can rebuild the internals of mine, I just need a new can and a glass to put it in.
