I was just thinking of taking some of the extra wire from my parts bike , the same type of flexable wire but just a little farther down the lead where its fresh. Do you think that stuff is bad?

Any new, highly flexible stranded wire ...

in the correct size would probably be a step better than a chunk borrowed from a wreck .... what the Diver's talkin' about is one of those lead wires like on the multimeter that you got uses ... apparently R. Shk. sells 'em separately ... good one, Ray ....

So, replace the wires from the connection from the coils to the part where it goes into the sheath? How does it connect to the pick up coils? Solder or connecter? Oh btw just rebuilt rear m/c but the kit for the front doesn't fit - I guess the front isn't stock oh well I have a replacement on the way, just waiting till thursday for time off and daylight , I wish I had a garage

I usually solder the new wire to the old. DO NOT cut the old too close the the coil, as it will be hard to get a good connection. If you have some GOOD flux, USE IT!! It will help the solder bond to the old, corroded wires. I also use a short bit of heat shrink tube to seal the connections. If you can find the Anchor brand marine grade, it has a glue that will make it water tight.

                I cant wait

Till tomorrow its my day off and hopefully I can get the 79f running tomorrow. Any tips on soldering I have never done it before, I read some stuff online like tinning the tip of the iron , but anything else I should know. For the splice do I just crimp the wires together and drop some hot solder on it??

Where would I find that brand?
Marine or boat supply. West Marine, Bass Pro, etc. should have the MARINE heat shrink tubing in stock. It has a heat sesitive glue on the inside, so it shrinks and seals. The warning is it is stiff, so you do NOT want to put a long piece on the wires, just cover the joint.

btw where in santa cruz do you live
I actually live in Aptos. It's just not many people know about our little town.
                            Glad you have it running!
Unless the rubber on the petcocks is really bad, you should be able to just clean and reuse everything. Make sure the inside of the handle is polished, so it turns without "grabbing". Georgefix on ebay is a reliable source for complete rebuild kits for the carbs and brakes.
