Engine Removal

  • Engine Removal

    The manual tells me to remove the mounting bolts, slide the engine forward and remove it on the right side.

    That is one honkin engine to move. Any suggestions on how to slide and remove it without rupturing discs in my back?

    If you take the upper front motor mounts out, you can slip a pipe thru the block, have a helper on the other side. Bring it out the right side.

      I slid a couple of 1 by 4's under the engine and used them as a ramp to slide it out.

      Also, and this probably helped more than anything, I cussed A LOT.

        Roar!

        Throwing all caution to the wind, I summoned superhuman strength, straddled the frame and lifted the engine forward. Then rotated it out. Thanks for the advice. Dang that was a heavy engine. I can lift the bike by hand now.

          you might also ...

          find that taking the oil filter cup off will add some additional clearance ...

              A 600 lb bike.. minus 225lbs for the engine.. 75 lbs worth of exhaust, seat, and tank.. Leaves a 300lb bike still. It's a magic trick!! Where is it!?

              A couple of times I've done the magic trick...








              So.. a lot lighter than it was.. yes. picking it up by hand now.. ummm.. Not if that engine seemed heavy! lol.

                I love the fact that you've got this bike torn down to the point of having the engine removed and the saddlebags are still on! Nice job getting that engine out! More power to ya'!

                    I like the way you did that with the wood.
                    When I removed mine,as I was stripping the whole bike, I just laid her on her side under my hoist, lifted the motor out with winch, shifted the frame, then slid a moving table under the engine , l owered it an started work.
                    Did the reverse putting it back in, frame lying on its left side, drop engine in .

                    no problem at all lads, none at all.
