I'd start by pulling the pilot jets out and checking to make sure they aren't plugged up.

The 3000 rpm mark is about the time the carbs start coming on the main jets, depending on how much twist you have in the wrist. I know this because I had a main jet come loose on me and the bike ran fine until I hit 3-5k. More twist drove the miss down to 3k wihile easy throttle would not miss until 5k.

I am really betting you have an idle circuit problem.
    Ich habe dich nicht gefragt.

You might notice this particular forum is for xs xj tech talk only not the place for talking about whatever god you follow , my father once told me to never talk about religion or politics in mixed company , I think that apllies here

It would be like going to a church forum and asking them how to fix a bike. There is a time and place for everything and this isn't the time or place.

Glad you are drawing people to think about Jesus too. I have found this site is full of good guys with christian principles willing to go to lengths to help the new guy. I am grateful I can be part of that!

              Joey,
If you need a synchronizer I have one you can use, I just ask that you send it back when you are finished with it.
It is a single unit where you have to do one carb at a time but it will work, I did mine with it and the carbs sync is good.
Let me know and give me your address and I'll get it in the mail to you.

If you want to buy a 4 carb synchronzer I know Jc Whitney has one for bikes for $79

"Help... my bike runs like HELL!"

Yes, GarthXS... this is the XS/XJ Forum.
But, the thread did start as a motorcycle question before it wandered alone into the wilderness.
Motorcycles and religion go a long way back:

                2 Chronicles 26:15
And he made in Jerusalem engines, invented by cunning men...

                Psalm 47:1
O clap your hands, all ye people; shout unto God with the voice of Triumph.

Now then, on to the problem... with the wisdom of Solomon.

                Chrisso states:
Ive been told that if your carb rubber intake boots are cracked you will have idle probs when hot...
Usually, the cracks don't go all the way through, but the manifolds still can be wicked.
                Amos 5:12
For I know your manifold transgressions and your mighty sins:
(By manifold transgressions and sins... he means vacuum leaks.)

The bible tells us how to properly mount the manifolds to the head.
                Job 41:16
One is so near to another, that no air can come between them.

Now... running without an air filter, that's just sinful!
Dirt and grit will be drawn into the combustion chamber and burned.
                Here's Ezekiel's take on that:
                Ezekiel 15:4
Behold, it is cast into the fire for fuel; the fire devoureth both the ends of it, and the midst of it is burned.
Sure, the midst of it is burned, but it can still result in particles of carbon sticking to, and burning the faces of the valves.

Running without an air filter can cause the engine to run lean... and the bible also says that's not good.
                Proverbs 3:5
Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not...

Running without an air filter can also cause crap to be sucked in through the air jets into the inner passages and plug the fuel jets, or maybe more relevent, the pilot screw hole... which feeds the idle circuit, hence, the bike dying at idle.(which would also explain why he has to apply choke to get it to restart.
Pull the carbs and give 'em a good cleaning.

                CLEANLINESS IS NEXT TO GODLINESS

                  mixed up

Garth sometimes our mother and fathers may be wrong. i know mine were in alot of areas. anyhow you said your father told you not to talk about religion or politics in mixed company. if everyone followed this saying that means there would be no church anywhere because alot of the congregation is composed of people who dont live or believe the same thing. next about politics i dont get into that but if that were the case no one would talk about that either because alot of people dont know who to go for.

                  TO JOEY

i regretlfully have to say that time is running out and we better be getting "our ducks in a row" so to speak. also if you did go to a church forum and there were people on there that had the knowledge of working on and fixing bikes i could just about garuntee that they would help you. why would they do this because of a simple overcoming thing called LOVE.

also if this is not the place or time to talk about the one and only god JESUS then why did he say in luke 14 and 23 "And the lord said unto the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled."

this was not the time or the place to have to go look for people but he did.

SEE EVEN THE MODERATOR GOT IN ON TALKING ABOUT JESUS PRAISE GOD.........GLORY

TELL HIM THIS AINT THE PLACE
                  Romans 5:8

But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

Damn! you must have spent the whole night linking those verses to the sage advice given. I guess perseverance could be considered a Promethean sin, to add to his original sin as the gods decreed.

                        As a moderator...
This is Joey's thread... and he was looking for answers to a problem his bike has. I can imagine that he'd like the thread to continue in that direction.

Hey tusler Thanks for the offer I did the bread tie thingy to the butterfly flaps to sync them and found out that the idle screws where messed up carb #1 was 4 whole turns out #2 was 1 turn #3 5 turns #4 2 turns. I moved them to 2 whole turns. The flaps where shut on #2 and #4 and #1 and #3where open almost two bread ties wide. Then I cleaned the carbs like yall said in a round about preacher way. It started right up and runs 100 percent better. And im going to say one thing a king once said CAN'T WE ALL JUST GET ALONG. AKA RODNEY KING
