I think I have a loose screw behind the handlebars.

If the oil consumption is high, carb adjustment is not going to cure that. But then you might have two problems there...Skids (Sid Hansen)
Down to one 1978 E. Stock air box with K&N filter, 81H pipes and carbs, 8500 feet elevation.

Put these carbs onto the special today. They work awesome so far as power is concerned.
Will have to wait and see what the fuel economy is like.
But, unlike the std, there was no bog, no sputter, no problem revving past 5000 in all gears. Therefore the problem has to be in the engine itself.
All I have to do is cut the timing chain, and undo the header pipes and the head is ready to come off and we will see what the heck is going on in there.Nice day, if it doesn't rain...

Took the head off, and it doesn't look like any of the valves are bent?!? It had spun nearly 180deg out of time, yet none of the valves apear to be hanging open.
There is a lot of carbon on the pistons and the head/valves.
I took the barrels off as well, and the compression rings look ok, but the oil rings look to be stuck in the pistons. I didn't have time to get a good look, but it's possible all the oil was coming past the pistons.Nice day, if it doesn't rain...

Ok, may have solved the oil consumption mystery.
On all 4 cylinders the ring gaps of the compression rings were together, and on the one I checked the ring end gap was over .080!
I would say these rings are very worn out, or wrong all together. It would have been putting a huge amount of the compression on the oil rings.
I hope to have it all together with the 1200cc motor by the end of the week.Nice day, if it doesn't rain...

Hit 50mpg last week with the SG.
Got the G running today, with new rings, head, etc. Have a valve cover leak to get rid of and the cam chain tensioner os drooling, but nothing major.Nice day, if it doesn't rain...

I am probably going to have to make a gasket out of a cereal box.

Took her out for a few laps around the block today. It's running nice, at least up to about 40mph.
I have a nasty oil leak underneath, somewhere, either the pan (which has never been off) or from the oil filter housing.
I've added running boards, which make the controls a bit odd, have to get used to them.
I set the carbs up the same as the other set, except for the improved neddle/tubes. 120 mains, 42 pilots.Floats at 23mm, plasti-dipped diaphragms. Carb #1 only has about 1 turn adjustment range on the idle mix screw.Nice day, if it doesn't rain...

Craz - When I first got Betsy I thought she had a leaking pan gasket that wound up being a bad o-ring on the straight plug under the timing cover. If you've got a sludge build-up directly under the plug it may be your culpret. If you do replace the o-ring be careful on the reinstall and don't over-torque it. It's made out of potmetal and snaps in two rather easily. DAMHIK

I have sludge all over, under there, but the only place it had a drip, last year, was from the tensioner.
I rebuilt the top end, but didn't touch the bottom, but now it is dripping from the front and rear of the pan.
I will have to pressure wash it off and then keep an eye on it to find out exactly where it is leaking from.Nice day, if it doesn't rain...
