Mikesxs say that their 5IX11 needle "Needle profile is Richer running than 5HX12." and their 366 YO tube "Matches Jet Needle - 5IX11 - and provides richer running than standard Y0 type"
To me, the above points to a pretty rich carb set up. Prior to '80 I think the 650's were running BS38 carbs.
Maybe that's why you did'nt really notice any difference between the 110-120 jets as the 650 needle was set up for a 132.5 main. I think that your needle profile is probably closer to what I have in the 79 which is set up to 137.5 mains of which I'm running 140's.
I was browsing a XS650 forum and it seems a lot of guys are having problems with their 80+ carbs so one guy on the site actually made his own needles. They say the difference is unbelievable.

Unfortunately, these are NOT the needles I have. We are not sure what the needles I have are from, as they are not lited anywhere for 1100s or 650s.
What happened was, I bought some tubes from MikesXS, and when they arrived, I realized they were different than the stock X-2 tubes that we have, so I did not use them. So I thought it may be worthwhile trying them with thier matched needles.
I have some wear in my tubes, and have ordered a set of needles that go with these tubes. Just so we know what they are, and if they can be of use to us.
Being richer is not a problem, as that is what the mains are for. I can always main down if needed. Right now, my bike is always too lean above 6000rpm.
I could also try the needles that Psyco has, but the 79s used different needles than the 80s too.
It says these are richer than Y-0. What is Y-0 in relation to X-2? I think we covered that earlier in this thread.
According to motorcyclecarbs.com a Y-O is richer then an R-8....a X-2 is richer then and R-8 but leaner then a Y-2 and a Y-2 is richer then an X-2
In their charts they don't have the Y-O with the X-2 but since the X-2 is right below the R-8 and just above the Y-2 they gots to be close Mind you the Y-2s come with 5 rows of four holes each.

I know the length has a lot to do with it but the taper also contirbutes to the mixture... a thicker taper near the bottom, like my 79 has must lean things out compared to thinner bottom profile on my 81 needles.

I am counting more on the 'matched' part of the deal, than anything else.
I figure that the 650 does not have any more throttle travel, or diaphragm movement than the 11, so, theoretically, the matched needles/valves SHOULD work together,
The only problem will be whether the extra richness can be overcome by adjustement.
I was thinking that the needles I have were longer than stock and were causing a problem, but they are .5mm shorter than stock, not longer.
The new needles are 1mm longer than stock, 1.5mm longer than what I have now.
So, hopefully the matched profile will do the trick. If you look at the chart (page 8) the profile is much more aggressive on the new needles.
I picked up a set of those kits for a '79. I mainly wanted the float valves, seats and bowl gaskets. I wasn't that happy with the valves, seem to be a poor quality finish.
I had a set of partsnmore carb rebuild kits that I installed last september. This past weekend all four of the needle and seats started leaking (6k miles or so). I ordered 4 rebuild kits from Carb Kit Capital (yamaha wanted $54 ea., just for the needle and seats!!!), and was surprised to see the billing on my credit card said partsnmore. Looks like they're the same parts. At the very least they are coming from the same company. Looks like egsols was right about the quality of the parts, and looks like I better be prepared to change 'em in another 6k. Thought I would pass it along.
I think I have a loose screw behind the handlebars.
That's why abandoned the stock metal float valves and went with viton tips. I figure even if the quality isn't the greatest the viton tip has a better chance of sealing then the all metal ones.
regarding the fact that the parts were from partnsmore was what worried me, what if I order the $$$$$ parts from Yamaha and the dealer ships me the same parts as partsnmore/carbkitcapital????
When I stripped the old ones out, that were installed by a Yamaha dealer no less, they were aftermarket....don't want to pay a premium price for $15 parts.

My experience with them has been less than stellar as well. Haven't had float valves fail but the gaskets were extremely hard and shrunken. Had to carve on 'em just to make 'em work.

I put the new needles and valves in yesterday. I only got to ride around town a bit, but so far, it runs very well.
No hesitation at low end, smooth acceleration up to 40mph.
I was going to hit the highway and try it out, but noticed the plug on the front of my cam chain tensioner fell out. Will have to fix it then go for a ride, although its getting quite cold here now.
Yeah, it sucks this time of year, went for a run this weekend, it was still nice out about 10 celsius, sunny, nicely coloured leaves. Right know temp is dropping, forecast for rain/wet snow today.
Hopefully you'll get out for a good trial run....don't you guys get 4 seasons in one day out there?
