    • No, the way the weather is here we not get real snow until December. Or it may snow today, but all melt next week...

I have to find the tensioner off my other motor and put it on. With no cap on it it drools oil all over the front of the motor.
Nice day, if it doesn't rain...

        • It's over.

          I concede defeat.

I replaced the cam chain tensioner, as per instructions. turned the motor over to 'C' removed the old assy, put in the new one (depressed as suggested).

Tightened it up, loosed the tensioner bolt, heard the 'snap', tightened the bolt and lock nut.

Put the timing cover on, turned the key, pushed the button and destroyed the top end.

This bike is cursed and shall never roam the streets again. After an excorcism, I MAY part it out next year, or just scrap it.

I know I can fix it, but this is the 2nd time I've trashed it on the tensioner, and I would never trust it again. If I can't wrench on it, I don't drive it. Period.

Been nice knowing you all, and I hope the demons do not go through the internet.
Nice day, if it doesn't rain...

          • Oh, Geeez ..

Sorry about that .... must have been too much slack in the chain for the tensioner to correct .... could have been combined with one cam a tooth off perhaps .... somehow the valve timing went all wrong for an instant. That sucks Crazy but I understand how you feel.

            • Been there, done that. I was fortunate just to bend one exhaust valve. Now, whenever I replace the tensioner, I'll slowly turn the crank with a 19mm wrench with the plugs out, just to make sure it spins freely. You'll have her running again, valves are pretty cheap but gaskets are not. Good luck, sorry for your loss man.

              • Nope, I'm finished. I'm not putting another nickel on this pile of crap.

This is the 2nd time I've bent valves, and my other head has been out getting 'fixed' for 2years.

If I can't even put on a cam chain tensioner, there is no way I will attempt to reassemble the other motor.

                • Craze really sorry to hear it. I know I bent two in a row before I got it running. I do understand and respect your decision I have been following this story and you have given it a hell of a shot. Maybe our paths will cross out there someday. Be great to meet ya and have a coffee. Have a good winter.

                  • Hey Craz,

                    Real sorry to hear.

You've done more then most would. At the very least you did get out for a few rides.

If I ever manage to get out to see my bro in AB, I'll have to look you up.

                      • I ordered a new head complete with valves and cams. I already have a new cam chain.

I am going to take the barrels off and check the pistons and rings while I have the head off, to see if I can figure out where all the oil is being burnt.

If it needs rings, that is not a big issue. I will change the valve seals on the new head, before I put it on.

I also took apart the carbs on my 'new' '80 Special, and it has exactly the same set up as the carbs we have been playing with came with.

                        110 mains in all 4
                        #45 pilot jets
5GLZ18 5 step needles in middle position
                        300 X2 tubes
                        185 air jet
                        Floats set ~ 20mm

I may put the carbs we have been discussing here on the Special and just see how they work on that bike.

At least until I can find a replacement carb body.

                          • hey Craz,
Those carbs sound similar to the carbs
fitted to my 81 sport, tho the pilots are 40
and the fuel level set at 23mm.
I felt for you with the old head, i did the same
thing when i first got my bike, i was able to ride it for a cpl
of hours after the cam chain adj, when i stopped and went to restart it i bent 4 intake valves. I over tightened the lock nut which pulled on the bolt which made the adj loose.
Hope it all works out for you.

                            • That was the 2nd head I toasted.

I don't have a line on rings, other than Hastings, I have a set from the first motor, that I hope may be within spec.

I didn't even look at the ol bike for 3-4 months. Then I broke down and started watching ebay again.

Now, with a 2nd bike I can swap the carbs back and forth to see if the issues are actually carb problems, or something else.

I am hoping that whatever was causing all the oil consumption is the real culprit.

                              • just throwing idea,s out there

if you,r certain the motor,s right and by 120_125 psi compression ,there can,t be to much wrong with it,and not knowing your fuel octane,s I,d be looking thru the carbs.

having said that, this is what I,d try.
                                1. pull every thing off & out of them so all you have is the body.
                                2. when reading these forums there is a lot of talk of three times cleaning. have you ever tried boiling your bodies to get rid of the gels & foriegn matter build up.I use it regularly down here in AUS and it works better than effectively.
Get yourself a drum, an oven shelf or something similar, set the shelf up so it,s just out of the water ,get the water boiling then sit the bodies in the steam, put a lid on it & go have a beer or a ham sandwich keeping an eye on the level, 1\2 hr or so. pull them out let them cool.
                                3. A very common problem down here is the very dry air cracks the slide diaphram rubbers which I use wifes nail polish to seal, does a damn fine job to, give the bodies a wipe over with a very dry soft cloth & reassemble with a smear of engine oil on the slides.
                                4. Refit to said rocket and normally happy motoring.
All you can do is try it & see what happens
