  • Help Find A Cure for Crazcnuk's bike?

My XS gets out accellerated by Royal Star Tour Deluxes and Harley electra glyde UC's.

It tops out about the same speed as a Virago 750 and gets the same fuel mileage as a decent pickup truck.

Ergo it's rotting in the driveway...
Nice day, if it doesn't rain...

Doesn't sound like a good thing.

The only time mine gets the same mileage as my truck is when my wrist has a severe kink in it.

Even loaded with bags, fairing and a stocky nine year old passenger, its hauls a%^.

Well, after 30+years of motorcycles, this one has put me off bikes altogether.

2005 Royal Star Tour Deluxe. Yamaha's V4 semi touring bike.

2008 Harley Davidson Electra Glide Ultra Classic, 890lb full touring 1500cc that gets 55mpg.

I'm not angry at it. It just refuses to cooperate, and after 2 years of it fighting me, I've had it.

Unless someone can come up with something REAL that may be wrong with it, I've run out of ideas. I simply can't afford to throw good money after bad. This is already the most expensive bike I've ever owned, and the worst running.

I'd LOVE to get it up and in it's glory again, but it's beyond me at this point.

Find another motor cheap this winter and swap.

I can honestly say that I do understand. I don't know of anyone on here that went through motors and had problems like i did until I finally got one that acts like it wants to work for a while.

I may have said it before on here, but I have put a little over 20k miles on this bike in three years, and a month or so ago was the FIRST TIME I changed the oil because it needed it. I have blown up something, bent something, or bearings wallowed out before I ever got 3k miles on it for it to need it. So really.. i do understand. Someone's name on here is Tiredoffixing... trust me .. I was tired of fixing it.

BUT... I have over 7k miles on it in the last month or so alone and it is an absolute pleasure to ride...

If you keep having problems with that motor... try a different one. If it's the carbs.. get a different set. Yeah, it may be a little more money, but you could sell parts and easily recoup what you spend.

I have about 5K on this one, this year. This IS the 2nd motor.

I have the original in the shed, with most the parts I need to rebuild it, but my luck lately has made me forget about putting it together.

Sure as crap I'd miss something and waste a pile of time and perfectly good parts.

I'm really sorry that your frustation with the 11 has reach its apex.

The PO of mine had been chasing a problem for 2 years and probably over $2000 paid out to various shops unitl he gave up and sold it to me.

I've now been chasing the problem for the last year. It was an annoying intermittent leak from the carbs. Last weekend after putting in a new set of float valves (for the umteenth time) and seats (from a virago) they still leaked on a bench test. I was furious. I told my wife it was time to forget the %^^$$%((^&^&^%%%^ thing and sell it or scrap it. I saw that look in her eyes that resembled a person having to put down their dog. (I've owned 11's for 20 years now and when we met we used to ride all over plus my 9 year son would be devestated if I ever got rid of it, he says he wants it when I grow out of it.)

The next day I gave one last try and believe that I have finally succeeded. No more leaks!!!! The bike now runs like a bat out of he%%.

If you ever get the time and have the desire, I am sure you can get resurrected. With all of your mechanical experience I'm sure you know the feeling of solving a nagging problem, its hard to beat.

I take it that you never did get the carb problem solved, i.e. no power in upper gears? It almost sounds like you're not getting enough fuel delivery under max load. (but your poor mileage would contadict that theory???)

I guess we all have our limits and I just wanted to say that your not alone in your frustation.

Thanks Saddle, I've already got that, although the XS falls more under the 'low rpm' CV tuning guide.

Mine runs fine. No leaks, no stumbles, it's not running out of fuel at the high end as it runs smooth right to the top.

It just has no power, and uses buckets of fuel.

I've tried rejettting, makes no difference at all, except now, with 120's it is REALLY rich. That being said, in a full throttle cut-off run, the plugs looked fine, but I screwed two spark plug holes when the PO's heli-coil decided to come out of one, and a 2nd hole decided it was not going to thread straight ever again...

Compression is 120-125psi across the board, at @3500ft above sea level. timing is dead on, advances are working.

Every thing works, even the self-cancelling signals.

I put in an '81 special motor, all new wheel bearings, new brakes, new tires, the Venture package, new fuse block, changed case guards, carrier rack, different seat, different exhaust, etc, etc.
Nice day, if it doesn't rain...

Sometimes you get so frustrated you over look the simplest of things. I dunno, jerk the air filter?? Good luck

Well.. if you've been through two different ENGINES trying to find the problem.. I'd say it's not the engine. Borrow a set of carbs off someone if you just can't get yours to work. If it runs well.. then you know where the problem lies.

I have no idea about the first engine it had spun a rod bearing before I got it.

There is no one to borrow stuff off of where I am, but I am pretty sure it's not the carbs, although, I have no idea what it might be. Coils? Who knows...

                              coils

The XS coils are old school and you need to replace with DYNA's or a set of Accels to get more spark, sounds like coil weakness....
