Blowing out the cobwebs

Looks like I started something with this thread... Getting more guys keeping their bikes running smooth by enjoying a great acceleration rush! How good is that?

Ok, when clearing cobwebs and running the engine at 6k+, I find all kinds of false neutrals when making the shifts quick. That blows the 'webs out even more as the tach needle zings on up the dial.

Serious though, is this just how the XS bikes are?

When not in a hurry, the bike shifts great but once the speed of the shift and engine rpm are stepped up a notch, she finds those other neutrals. Could be user error and I'm not being forceful enough with my foot when shifting, but I don't feel like it is.

Any ideas, or just slow down a bit on the shifts?

Hey Bonser,

Yeah, I find that 4th to 5th false neutral occasionally myself. What might help would be to position your shifter lever a spline or two lower, can give you better leverage for pulling it up for a more aggresive shift action!?

These are a real clunky tranny. I find you need to be pretty assertive when shifting. A light tap just dosen't do it.

The shifter feels like it is at a good position for good leverage already. It is a relatively short throw between 2-3-4-5 compared to other bikes I have owned, and it just seems to me the bike isn't good at handling shifts during heavy acceleration.

Heck, the bike isn't for that purpose at this point in it's 28 year life anyway, so I'll just be careful and more deliberate when nailing it to blow the cobwebs out, and otherwise enjoy a great bike!

You might try this technique when shifting...

Preload the shifter.

That is, put light pressure on the shifter in the direction of the next shift well before you shift to the next gear, then when it's time to shift, just put extra (normal) pressure on the shifter as you would usually do.

This often helps with the false neutral problem.
