  • right mirror

Part of my right side mirror threads broke off in the perch. I drilled it out but final drill bit was too large. (standard/not metric) I tried PC-7 and waterweld---didn't work. I have been unsuccesfully in trying to find a left hand thread helicore kit.
Any suggestions--this is a 82 XJ 1100. I thought about JB Weld but figured it wouldn't be any better than the other two cold weld products.

    How about;

Drill in horizontally, tap it and install a lock bolt with lock-tite.

      right mirror

      Randy,
Sounds intresting---I have a 5/16 hole, so you want me to drill a horizontal hole, place mirror in hole, (this is left hand thread and the hole even if tapped will be too large of a diameter than the 10mm size mirror stem). Please fill me in.

        It's a common set-screw arrangement.

You have a cylindical mount. Drill a small (5 or 6mm) hole in the side, tap the hole according to the size you drilled. Install a bolt in the hole you made. Install your mirror stem and tighten the bolt to capture the mirror stem.

if you go one step further and get a pointed set screw, you can drill a corresponding relief in the mirror stem, that will lock it in place to keep it from accidentally spinning.

        I hope that's clear.

          Randy,

OK, I read you now--thats a smart idea. That will be me my next move.

How about tap it for a right hand helicoil and install a mirror with right hand threads. You might even have more choices on mirrors that way.JAT

              right mirror

              JAT,
I thought of doing that, but figured the left hand thread used on the right was designed/engineered for that application.

                Another uneccessarily brilliant idea

" I thought of doing that, but figured the left hand thread used on the right was designed/engineered for that application."
                Hi Dodjh,
remember when Dodge/Plymouth used L/H wheel nuts on one side? Didja ever see a wheel fall off one after they quit doing it?
Me neither. And there's a conspicuous lack of non-Yamaha right-side mirrors decorating the highways too.
Cross-drilling for a keeper bolt will let you use a Yammie mirror but will bitch the adjustment so get it right eh? Or salvaging the stripped out hole with a normal R/H M10 helicoil will let you use an aftermarket mirror.

                  right mirror

                  Hey Fred,

Thanks for the feedback---you are saying it would be ok to install a right hand thread helicore kit on the left side? I remember the L/H thread on the Dodge/Plymouths, I worked at a service station when I was a young/old teenager.
The hole diameter is now 5/16, so I hope the 10mm size hole
                  helicore kit will work.

                    Try a Time-Sert?

                    Hi Dodjh,
if the 5/16" is too big for an M10 Helicoil to work, try a Time-Sert. A Time-Sert insert has a definite wall thickness instead of being a coil of thread and so may need a bigger special tap.

                      Hi Dodjh,

Yamaha used a L/H thread on the right mirror so that if the mirror gets knocked, it comes loose, instead of overtightening in the ally; in most incidents, they get knocked back, not forward!

ALL the other manufacturers used standard threads both sides.

When I first started working in bike shops (1978?) we caried a range of adapters to fit all sorts of mirrors into all sorts of holes; LtoR hand and RtoL hand adapters plus 8to10mm and 10 to8mm 'cos some of the small Hondas used 8mm mirrors. I have not seen any of those for years, but they must be out there somewhere!

Would let you T-sert back to 10mm then fit an adaptor and your original mirror.

If it ain't broke, modify it!

                        right mirror

                        Hey Fred and Alan,

Thank you for your viewpoints. I understand Yamaha's reason for the left handed threads now. I have never used a T-sert and will research its use. I would like to go back factory so I'll have to be carefull with the T-sert or heilicore.
I'll try and find a Honda version mirror or do the right hand thread heilicore.

                        Thanks again,

I have a helicoil chart right here.
                          For a 10mm x 1 helicoil you need a .404 drill(standard 13/32 .406 will work)
I would do that .The trisert may be too big outside diameter to leave enough material on the boss. You may want to check how thick it is.

                            right mirror

                            Tarzan,
Thank you for the drill bit size on the 10mm X 1" helicore---that would be just a little bigger than a 3/8 bit if I did my math correctly.
The present hole is about 5/16, so I'm still in the ball game.
