Take a little extra care on the rotor install. I had just set it on a the crank shaft a couple times and installed it. Apparently there was some sort of dirt or something somewhere because it made the rotor rub the stator. Any rubbing at all will ruin them, and they aren't cheap or always easy to find. The shaft is slightly cone shaped and the rotor is also to fit it. Spray the shaft and rotor down liberally with carb cleaner. Get a block of wood on the face of the rotor and give it a good whack with a shop hammer to get it set good on the crank, then torque the bolt.

There is very little clearance between the rotor and stator on the cover of the XJ's when it's installed. I've ruined 2 stators by not doing it this way.... and none since I have.

Thanks for the advice, guys. I'll make sure the rotor is on 100%. I'll crank the motor over by hand after the install to make sure there's no binding.

There's a plug on each side. On the timing side it is a alloy bolt and on the alt side it is a simple plug. that's the way it is set up on the XS11 engine anyway ..

            there is no bolt...

Just realized something... The PO omitted the flywheel bolt! UGH.

Any clue as to what size that bolt was?..

            thanks!

                you guys rock

Yay! Flywheel came off, thanks to a loaner puller bolt... Just screwed it in tight, and whomped it with a hammer real good... The old seal put up a fight at first, but on-demand-OCD always wins

New seal is in, and no more leak.. I applied some 1104 gasket sealant around the perimeter before I stabbed it back in. I also found a suitable replacement bolt and washer in the junk drawer, and cut out a new gasket for the alternator cover.

From the looks of it, there's no chance of that bolt backing out since the way the motor turns, it would constantly try to tighten, right?

Thanks guys, I appreciate all the advice!
