So are these the tubes that vent the excess gas from the carbs? And I wasn't paying attention when I removed the carbs. So do the lower tubes on the carbs go to the petcocks:

There are no tubes that vent excess gas from the carbs.
The upper "T"s on the carbs are the bowl vents. They allow the bowls to breathe... as the fuel rises and falls. Hoses from them go to the airbox... and plug into those little tubes.
The bottom "T" on the carbs is for fuel.

So those tubes are why I used to get fuel leaking out of the airbox metal mesh on the bottom from time to time?

NO the fuel would come directly from the carb, NOT THE VENTS.

Now.. when the carbs flood... they don't flood through those hoses.... The junction "T"s are too high up. Fuel runs into the airbox through the air jets for the main jet and such, which are quite a bit lower on the carb.
NO the fuel would come directly from the carb, NOT THE VENTS.
            XSChop...
Take your beady eye and look closely at the airbox side of the carbs. See those three holes?
The bottom two are to allow air in to mix with the fuel drawn up by the main jet and the pilot jet. (The third hole is an air inlet for the enrichener/choke circuit.)
Now then... you see the level that those air jets are at?
            Good.
Now... you see that the "T" for the vent hose is about an inch higher than those air jet holes?
            Good.
Now then, as we all understand the laws of physics and such... if the carb needles leak and the carb start to flood... is the fuel gonna come pouring out those lower holes first... or is it gonna magically rise an extra inch and come out the vent hose?
Ok, I know it was tough...
It'll come out the little holes on the bottom first.
Those vent hoses just go to the airbox as it's a nice place to go... keeps the mud wasps and such from crawling in the open hose ends.

              Hey XSchop,

              Awesome job!!!

Regarding the vents, a question or thought.....I thinking Prom might be able to provide insight.....would it work if you put two nipples, maybe drilled out grese fittings, on your front plate for the vent hoses?

I asking because I'm wondering if, on this new setup, the increased air flow past the vents could cause a negative pressure effect in the bowls?

On the stock setup the vents are located in a spot that would not see a direct air flow past the ends of the vents.

BTW, 2007 Kawa KLR650 vents the carb with a tube running straight down to nowhere, no filter, no cap, nuttin. I know this cause my buddies vent hose melted shut from the exhaust heat and stalled his bike out.

                those vents

Egsols, I'm glad I'm not the only one wondering about those stock nipples and if they created a vacuum on the upper vent tubes. The stock locations have them well out of the way of the velocity stacks. So if I do drill spots for nipples I will do it above and behind these new stacks....very good point.

                  Fired Right Up!

Other than the XJ tank petcocks being right next to the housing (Only because I welded the tank rubber prongs back 3/4" for more Busa tree/fork Play) The whole Carbs/ custom airbox takes less than a minute to remove. I Put about 200 miles on the chop this weekend, But tore it down today, because I think I have the rear light wires backwards. The throttle response seems even zippier than the K@N filter that I had in the stock housing....will get a pic up tomorrow. It's late and my 4 day weekend is over

                    PIXELS

I made the rear plate from 1/8" steel because I wanted to weld a bracket (middle) so I can unbolt the airbox with one M6x1.0 nut attached to the rear rectifier bolt(easy to get to)....

front plate is alloy and held by stainless socket screws....This really will come in handy when I do the big bore and maybe try a set of Bandit carbs or ZRX12 carbs...heres a side shot...looks like I have room for Nitrous bottle

Here's what the box looks like from the rear, plenty of leg clearance....

                      Hi Chop,

That looks amazing; both the airbox..... and the rest!

Filter set-up reminds me a lot of my old T150V Triumph; I liked the look on there too! LOL!

Go get some modern carbs on it; the difference is incredable, and it will be easy work after all you have done!

I still haven't figured out which carb swap would be the Best from posts by AE7F and others. Seems like 36mm is the magic number though!

Chop, looks good! When did I miss the exhaust mods? don't remember seeing shorty muffs with turn down tips! is that a cross-over? still 1&2 and 3&4?

                                Hey Brian

Still 4-2 with turn down tips, no x-over. I did reweld brackets to the XS frame and pipes to get them tucked in tighter. I like the way they look turned down, Just got some 2.5 I.D. Tips from AutoZone......I may even wrap them with exhaust tape but don't know yet. How's your Project?
