xschop, your doing it backwards you remove the carbs to get the air box out of the frame. you don't have to pull the air box, just slide the carbs out from between the air box and the engine and leave the air box in the frame.

      not a guru but...

I'm totally not a guru but here's something to think about. If the same volume of air moves through a smaller opening it has a different pressure and velocity. Maybe this is the reason for the snorkel - or maybe it's just to look cool - dunno. Personally, I've done the cone thing and am happy with it. It's not perfect but we're talking tenths of a second in the quarter mile here... I rejetted (don't remember to what so don't ask) my XJ when I installed them - actually I drilled the jets (God forbid).

Give your idea a shot - but you'll most likely need a rejet. Just my $.02 Let us all know how it goes.

        backwards

getting the carbs out without removing the velocity stacks is a friggin pain. I already have the carbs secured by a stainless strap that hangs from the rear rectifier bolt. With this et-up, I can remove the whole shabang with that one screw and carb to engine clamps

          easy out carbs

Chop sounds like a good idea esp with teh time it would save only thing would be figure out teh difference in air flowm CFM wise and adjust carbs to match. one good thing about old ikes you can just do what ya like.

            Holey Snorkel

"What about...drilling holes in the SNORKLE! "
            Hi Skids,
there's the tale of a fellow out quail hunting who accidentally shot himself in the snorkel. (just the very edge of the pattern, just a few #7 pellets) He visited his doctor who said,
I can't help you, go see this man.
Is he a specialist in genital repair?
No, he's a flute player; he'll show you how to hold it.

                filter

you gonna make one now? Save you some troble by letting you know that the bottom plate needs to be exactly 1/8" thick, 77-84-77 spacing with 54mm holes for the velocity stacks on those centers. I ordered the E2880 filter for the compact size. After it's all done and said this will be the easiest mod ever, won't even interfere with the stock petcocks.....would like to hit the slopes sometime, even if they are just lake slopes....I will be in New Mexico or Colorado this winter for a ski trip.....chop

(I failed H.S. algebra, so I can't do the fancy schmancy equations, but that "X" volume is made up of something like 15 parts air and 1 part fuel.)

14.7 to 1 is supposedly the ideal ratio for air to fuel. The he%$ with algebra when yous gots the internet.
