What I wish is that the velocity stacks were just smooth metal chrome barrels... and that they they were fitted with an o-ring seal at the carb side that just slid over the carb mouths...and that similar seals were on the air box, sorta like fork seals, just thinner and really precise...
So that when it came time to pull the carbs, I could just slide the stacks back into the air box and leave them there..until it was time to reinstall the carbs and slide them back over the intakes again.. There would be little tabs on the lower intake side to make sliding the stacks in and out really easy..
Got my filter from FED-up-EX...Looks like a nice fit under the tank. Will start on the plates Sat. gotta go to metal supermarkets and get the 1/8" alloy....

Maybe this is the reason for the snorkel - or maybe it's just to look cool - dunno. Personally, I've done the cone thing and am happy with it. It's not perfect but we're talking tenths of a second in the quarter mile here... I rejetted (don't remember to what so don't ask) my XJ when I installed them - actually I drilled the jets (God forbid).
Give your idea a shot - but you'll most likely need a rejet. Just my $.02 Let us all know how it goes.

The snorkel just ensures that the air supply is from a high and dry location. It's also quieter up under the upholstered seat.

Hey Rob, I figured that the case. When I had the The Blue-streek one piece seat and sidecover, I cut the snorkle off right at the box with no effect on the response/performance. I figure that this filter has less surface area than 4 pods, I am hoping to get lucky and not rejet after the install....How's the swingarm coming along? I was re-thinking (hard to believe) again about the KZ1000 swingarm as a donor(cheap) for the xs11 as a chaindrive because of its dimensions....

I am still working on the Katana but will be stripping the frame for the wielding the week after the Rally. The building of the swing arm will be the last thing I do. So keep options coming. I have had no luck scoring a ZRX swing arm. In a pinch I will build one as was done by others with earlier chain drive conversions.
As for the air filters ... If you have non stock pipes on the bike and you don't re-jet (oh what fun) your engine will likely be running worse off then stock. Set up your air intake as you see fit and re-jet to match what you got. I would even attempt running pods and a pipe if I didn't have my color tune plugs.

I just calculated the surface area of this oval filter at 46" sq....I will check the KN filter that goes in the stock XS airbox tomorrow. Yes, the ZRX swingarm is hard to get ahold of, I check the bay regularly for it. Lot of modding going on with that arm.Scappod installed his and then left outta town.Should here from him soon. I figured the brackets for the stock XS shocks will put the new mounts @ 4 inchs away from the top mounts....If I decide to go with this ZRX swinger on my next build, I will use the ZRX shocks or New KZ1000 Shocks (100 bucks ebay) since they are 14.25" I2I....After checking shock lengths, it got me thinking about the KZ swinger again. Since it's 9.25" at the pivotsand the shock mounts are right at the XS11's, I believe the XS11 pivot ends/bearing could be grafted onto the KZ swingarm...There are about 10 of them on the bay right now at $20 each....JAT

Hey Prom, The stock airbox has the 2 ports with brass tubes inside the stock airbox. I don't want fuel overspill from the carbs to ever contact this K&N filter. Can I plug those lines off or reroute somewhere else so I don't have to drill the holes for the lower plate on this custom housing?

Doesn't matter where you route the vent hoses from the carbs, just as long as the hoses can vent to atmosphere.
Now.. when the carbs flood... they don't flood through those hoses.... The junction "T"s are too high up. Fuel runs into the airbox through the air jets for the main jet and such, which are quite a bit lower on the carb.
"Damn it Jim, I'm a doctor, not a mechanic!' ('Bones' McCoy)
I took the time to program the stock XS11 velocity stack locations in the CNC if anyone else wants one after I R&D this one. I Still have to weld two nuts to the lower .125" plate(steel) for the top plate bolts and will weld another in the middle to run a hanger strap from the rear rectifier bolt located just 3 inches away. But wanted to take pics of how it looks on the inside. I cut the velocity stacks down by 1". Very simple design and will be able to remove this housing in less than a minute....Headache solved.....CHOP

Yes, the third nut mentioned above will be welded on the rear plate which is directly below the rear rectifier bolt. I will remove the front rectifier bolt that I have now hanging the carb bodies. So the carbs will be isolated from any vibrations just like the factory setup......
