gearing up for the gear swap

Ok I've been reading abt how to do this job from the link provided in this thread...however I would like to know where i could find a diagram that has all the gears id'd in their proper position on the shaft.It seems i am confused by the order they are in???

Just Slipping?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but If it's only SLIPPING wouldn't that just be the clutch??? The tranny problem is that it jumps out of or never engages the gears! You man not need to do all that work!!!

Well you know it would be a good idea if I had someone with a greater knowlege of the problem test ride the bike and then evaluate it...I will try this approach first..Its hard for me to describe it definitinely enough online for anyone to be certain what exactly it is i am experiencing...So If you were right then i have extra gears for the future..however i feel this is still a xnsmission problem...so I hope for the best but expect to deal with the worstOTOH I have a habit of describing this effect as a slipping but it feels like its jumping out of gear and then it will grab back again and evrytime it jumps you can fell the engine/trans "bang"and you can feel the shock throughout the bike...so dont know if that helps...I will cover all bases and check the clutch first

It seems that the XJ finds the problem in FIRST gear versus second more often than not. You're doing the right thing by fixing it now. All that shock and extra wear will only mean more material to grind off if you do the Dremmel. I realize you may be going back new... so maybe you're just doing the next guy a favor?

Oh well that's prolly the gears then. Mine SLIPS and I know it's just the clutch letting go a little when the bike is pulling really hard. I've got new springs and plates but it doesn't bother me enough to tear into it just yet! I'm sure I'll be doing the tranny someday....hopefully in the distant future. Good Luck!

Tod I ain't thinkin' bout the next guy...just me... I bought Madmax new as a leftover in '83.I was in my local Yamaha shop abt 20 miles from home..and they had an '82 Maxim XJ1100 on the showroom floor that I was looking at.The salesman walks up and puts a red "SOLD" tag on the handlebar end.So I said something to the effect that i was $### out of luck...and the sales man says ..."not so we've got one more"...I look around and say really? Where? Turns out it was in the warehouse room still crated up...so they had someone uncrate it and final assemble and give it the once over....I actually saw Madmax's birth so to say...The rest is History...

Yeah, but you'll be done with the old gears when the new ones get installed. Some of us poorer folk may indeed inherit them sometime.

Flipping the bike - Brakes?

Hey, guys who have done the tranny fix AND have done it with the bike flipped---what did you do with the brake masters? Does air get into the lines with the bike flipped?
