  • I'm a picture whore....

    Here's some updated pics with the new MikesXS air filters, 35k coils and red 8mm plug wires. And for gunslinger a picture of my fat arse on the bike.

    P.S. Everytime I ride another bike, I love my XS11 more. My dad's bike (the white roadstar 1700) is great but the acceleration is not there. Last weekend I rode a modded Honda CBR600 and I hated it. Granted I am in no way the crotch rocket body type, but the thing just had no low end and by the time you're having any fun, you're going way too fast and making enough noise to attrack every po po within a 5 mile radius. I know that 600 will dust my bike, but mine still "feels" faster. I'm starting to realize why all you crazy people keep these bikes on the road!

      Thanks! You were right, you don't look half bad on it! Looks like it fits you (or visa versa) just fine.

      You know, maybe it's the bike?... Mine seems to fit me (at 6', 175lbs, wiry), and we sure have a varied-sized group of riders on this board and all their bikes seem to fit them... maybe the XS/XJ 1100 series just makes the rider look gooooood regardless of height/weight? It's magic!

      Oh, read your other post about having to move your plate. That's some B.S., man! Sorry to hear that.

      • The high-beam circuit runs both lamps in series. They'll both work, but at less than half power.


        Please note that I have not actually done this to my bike.


        You can run the lamps in parallel and isolate the high-beam from the low-beam with a power diode or SCR. The lamps use about 3 Amps each on paper, so use a 5 Amp Schottky diode or SCR (Silicon Controlled Rectifier) with a small heatsink to drive the low-beam:

        • Hey Scott/3phase,

          Thanks for the info and the diode suggestion and correction on the wiring layout. I haven't used diodes before, so I don't think about using them. Adding the diode helps to keep using the OEM switches, and provides FULL power to both lights when on HIGH beam setting.

                That's not actually a streetfighter, it's a bobber.

                A streetfighter is a whole different kettle of fish. For a start the rear ends tend to be raised not lowered, the bars are either flat or drag, not wide pull backs like them. Streetfighters are about high-performance, quick handling machines (those that aren't straightliners that is), and are more like stunt bikes than cruisers.

                I've been building streetfighters (roughly) for a few years now and you would never see that rear guard on a streetfighter, not because nobody has thought about it, but because it would be tantamout to putting it onto the latest crotch rocket, just wouldn't look right for the style.

                While I don't normally like bobbers I really do like this one, excellent piece of work. Interested in what effect it has had on handling? And how does it wheelie?

                  Speak English Man!!! Just kidding! By "rear guard" do you mean rear fender? I do consider it a blend of bobber/prostreet/low rider. To me a bobber is usually a little more minimalistic and rougher around the edges than mine. As for a lowrider, the pipes sit 2.5" off the ground so it looks very low. Handling is good although I didn't build it as a corner carver. I drag the exhaust before I drag the pegs . And Wheelies?....have you seen me? I have never really tried too hard to make it stand up. Part of me wants to pop the clutch in first and see what happens (probably tire smoke before wheelie) but the other part wants to take care of this and make it last as long as I can. Don't get me wrong, I rap it out every time I'm on it, but I roll into it smooth.

                    • I used Martin-Senour paints available at NAPA. I did not have a paint code so I just ask for a good dark black. I believe he told me it was a Chevrolet color "Back to Black".

                        Sorry mate, guard (aka mud guard) is Ocker for fender

                        and yeah it is the high degree of finish/polish on your bike that I really like about it, unlike most bobbers I've seen. Really don't know anything much about prostreet/low rider types, but if they helped finish your bike off they must be OK.

                        I woulda thought with your weight on it, opening it up in any gear would produce some fun power stands from the front end. Used to ride a modified GPz9 that would lift its front at the least provocation. was damned fun to pull power stands on at ~120 mph, yours looks like it would be just as much fun.

                          When I'm finished with the Honda project, I'm gonna have to start me an XS11 project. (Oookay, maybe right after I finish the Norton project. Damn these projects can pile up in a hurry.)

                            Did you notice my professional carb tuning in my signature? I think I want to try and drop the needles one notch. I'm talking the large needles that run thru the emulsion tubes. I was talking to the local old yammy professional and he said that will lean them out. I am still super rich and it stumbles under full throttle at 4k.

                            If I do this will I have to reset the idle mixture screws and re-sinc?

                              If ur going to change the needles with the carbs in situ,
                              u wont have to re sync,
                              if u take the carbs off its always a good idea to check the sync,
                              im guessing u dont have gauges?

                              You also shouldnt have to redo the mixtures either.
