Well, with the ballast resistor in line, it was getting ~1.57 ohms, not too far off from the 2 you are now measuring with the OEM's, but with the ballast, that'll put you at ~3.5 which is better!

Have you tried measuring the caps by themselves, and then the secondaries without the caps!? The caps have resistors in them, and can corrode and totally prevent any flow..=no reading!?

IF they show NO continuity, you can unscrew them from the spark plug side, and remove the resistor, clean the contacts, check the resistor...if after cleaning it still doesn't show any continuity you can put "something" like a spring or other piece of metal to bridge the resistor space and at least run them without any resistor, won't hurt anything, just makes RF noise...buzz in your radio!

Truth be told, I was a little rough with the caps because I didn't know you had to take the terminal screw off the sparkplugs. That being said, plug number two is running a resistor-less right angle boot. I've got another set of resistor-less plug wires I can use the boots off of if I can't get these original NGK's back on there.

Ok. Went back out and checked everything with the stock set of coils on it. My TCI test only revealed about 10.6 V with the ignition on. I'd bet a dollar it used to read 11 something with the Accels on there. Anyways, I pulled the caps off all 4 of the wires and cut back 1/4 inch. I could get 15K ohms on 1&4 but nothing on 2&3 no matter how I wiggled them around. I also lost continutiy on 1&4 when I put the boots back on. I'm seriously thinking I should just sell off the 140404 Accel coils and put the money toward some Mikes XS coils. The ballast resistor is still wired in so that should be fine.

I pulled the top off the TCI module and all the solder joints look nice and clean. If Randy would like to chime in and tell me what else to look for on it I'd be very grateful.

So as of right now, I've got one coil that ohms out right on primary and secondary, one that only ohms out on primary and a TCI only showing 10.6 V.

        Wonderful.

Well, I revisited Randy's web page and I apparently misread that the voltage test should come up between 10 and 11 V so I suppose 10.6 would be in that range. Sounds like my TCI survived having the wrong coils on it after all. It seems I'm down to just troubleshooting the coils.

            Hey Manshack,

IT does sound like you've got a bad coil! Since it's most likely fried, you could cut the wires up next to the coil housing for one last test, or even cut into them per the NEW WIRES IN OLD COILS tech tip, and see IF you can get a reading!? IF you can, then the old wires may have gotten damaged somehow much deeper than the tips, and putting NEW wires in might help!? But IF you get no readings when you cut into the coil, then just toss them!

Yeah, Ebay those other supercoils. The MikesXS coils work well, and you should still bypass the resistor when you put "THEM" in, since they don't use or need the reisistor it would be difficult to run the OEM resistor one and 1 of the MikesXS ones, so either run a pair of the MikesXS, or get an OEM one from Andreas Weiss or someone on the forum, so you can use the resistor!

I'm hangin' TC! I've got plenty of patience. And a set of coils coming from Andreas!

On the stock set I have when I cut 1/4 inch off I could still see corrosion so I may have to go even further up. Or just wait for the set from Andreas to get here.....

Manshaft, I got your last cheque for the coils i sent,do you still want me to send you another set,or should I send the cheque back as the first set of coils had a bad one.Remember if the coil was no good you do not have to pay. I will either return cheque or send another set of coils. please advise. andreas

                      What is a Manshack? Hmm.
My mormon Aunts would tell you
it came from Menchaca which is
                      native american/spanish.

It changed to Manshack when the clan settled
in South East Texas to sound more American (read white).
My grandfather looked like a spanish indian when he was
younger. When my grandmother entered the picture
everything got bleached a little because she's a McSwain
who's family migrated straight outta Ireland back in the 20's.
So now everybody's white, except my kids who are half Spanish
being that my wife is whole Spanish. They tan well.

Sorry for the long explanation. I wanted to buy manshack.com for a family site but someone beat me to it and turned it into a gay porn site. Get it? Man Shack. Lousy pornographers.

OK, I thought at first that it was a web nickname.

Yeah, but Manshaft.com might still be available. You could put all sorts of "hetero" stuff on it and p*ss them off!

Getting back to the subject at hand (pun intended),
I got the replacement coils from andreas put on the bike tonight.
buttoned everything back up but it still wouldn't fire. I don't think it's the coils just yet though. I'm susupecting the battery has been run down from 2 weeks of me trying to crank it! You think? It was sounding pretty weak. So, on the charger it goes until morning. If it doesn't try to start in the morning I'll be posting for professional help over in my "Call for Help" thread.

Well I gave up troubleshooting it myself and decided it was time to call in a pro. Steve, the guy I bought my 79 special from, has a 79 standard. He had a mutual friend of ours get his 79 standard up and running so that's where I sent my 79 special to. Here it is on the way out. I highly recommend these little uhaul trailers. my local store didnt' have actual bike trailers but this one only ran me $24.95 and the ramp is spring loaded and low to the ground with hooks for tie downs in all four corners. Plus they waive the deposit if you pay via credit card. Handy for sure.

I had a similar "no spark but engine turns over fine" problem last week on my '80 SG. Turned out to be a broken pickup wire - the same problem as Desert1 pointed out earlier in this thread.

You might want to give your mechanic a heads up on this one. I took hours to find the problem because I 'knew' that a faulty pickup wire would only affect 2 cylinders and I had all four not firing.

                                Now I know better.
