Just a preview for everyone that has emailed me on the CNC machined 1-piece ADJUSTABLE chain drive housing that I have been promising. The programming that it took to get this jewel complete was enormous, not to mention I machined 4 extra "jigs" to zero from ( I have to flip and zero 2x) so I can reproduce these for fellow XSives. I also have machined one to fit the xs750/850...keep in mind that I will need your or an extra middle drive shaft if you want the chain drive/ fatter tire....CHOP

Wicked! Chop that's some seriously classy work, a pic of the insides, bearing placement and shaft mods would be interesting too when sorted. The bolt positions A & B, the bolts need shortening with the bolt heads sitting about where the red X's are to get chain clearance from my perspective, hopefully not a problem, also as you know, the sprocket/chain clearance between crankcase and drive unit is very tight, especially to run a 14 tooth sprocket, the crankcase surfaces need a couple of mm's skimmed down for clearance, I've got some pics somewhere showing where I lightly skimmed the alloy with an angle grinder, but not needed if running 13 tooth sprocket

That's the housing that will completely replace the existing middle gear .. right. Really nice work there Xchop

replacement
will be replacing mine for sure. for Pggg, the sprocket will sit outside the bearing/housing surface, the cuts you see are the bolt head indentions and the chain can be adjusted left if you need to go superfat 190/200 like me oh yeah, the insides and back are exact measurements/positioning/stock bearing sizes as the original factory. you will even be able to use the factory M/D Gasket! All been mulled over, believe meLast edited by xschop; 08-21-2007, 06:50 PM.MDRNF

Wow! very nice!!
I don't really have a need for the conversion, but if I did, that would certainly be the route to go. Beautiful work!80 XS1100SG

?????? who wants skinny??????
I based this chaindrive off the dimensions you gave me. BTW, so I don't have to search all the old posts, What is the distance from your engine case to the inner front sprocket? The Kawasaki GPZ and Kawasaki zx11-9 swingarms are perfect and can get an easy 180 tire on....I think that the 180 tire is as wide as you can go without having to trim the inner frame on the xs11. You say that your chain in relaxed position just barely touches the frame and that's cool. this set-up will allow for +- 15mm adjustment for many different swingarms/sprocket/tire combos.....Now to answer your question, I guess if you were Crazy enough you could go really skinny and put on a bicycle tire But seriously, for aesthetics you could get an xs650 rear rim with the chain sprocket, but you would be back to skinny tire, but with a few more horses in the stable.....As another sidenote, I checked up on the new '07 R1 swingarm and it is a definite candidate, moreso because the new design would allow for numerous shock mounting positions...MDRNF

That's some seriously badass work chop. I've been wondering if it's possible to convert over to a chain drive for quite awhile, not so much for the fat tire as much as the ability to mess around with gear ratios. How many of these things are you thinking about making? I'd be very interested'81 XS11 SH (XSelsior)

gear ratios
definitely easier to swap a front sprocket than a final drive. IMHO, the best all around final ratio on the xs11 is 3:1...The xs750/850 FD mod is the bomb, I'm greedy and want the fat Radial tire also. And to top it all off, with the Single-Sided Swingarm and aftermarket wheel lift, I can change the rear tire in literally a few MINUTES. The chaindrive is for better performance, I will be loosing another 25-30 lbs from the whole chain conversion on mine. I am already 65 lbs lighter than a stock xs11 with all the mods I have done and another 10-15 lbs from the Hayabusa front end that I have....If you want one, you will have to wait in line( and hunt down a middle shaft), I've got the next one spoken for.....MDRNF

Chop, I can't figure how you're fixing the front sprocket to the drive unit splined shaft yet, but I can see issues with frame clearance if the front sprocket is offset too far to the left hand side, my 530 front sprocket is 85mm out from the engine case/drive unit join. That position matches with a 110-112mm centreline to inside sprocket measurement on the back wheel. From the pics your front sprocket would be positioned quite a bit further out to the left with the chain line basically completely obstructed by the rear frame, also I can't see how any stock production rim/tyre/swingarm setup will align with the front sprocket offset so far to the left?
PS I'm tryin' my hardest not to sound like a wet blanket here!

wet maybe
No, it's ok. the pic above is the drive that is going on the 1200 big bore that you've seen with the frame notched ( although I am going to put it on PEPE and see where the chain hits on the stock frame). When I make the other housings, All I have to do is reset the Y-axis on my CNC to bring the sprocket closer to the case/ farther from the frame.....Like DennyZ said "Go big or go home"...thanks for the measurement...ChopMDRNF

Pggg, can you repost the Sprocket Specialists 13 & 14 tooth sprocket #s. I can't find them in the old posts anymore IIRC you and 50Gary or Audijunky made the discovery....ThanksMDRNF
