So...your carbs leak?
Have had black electrial tape on my 80G for a least a year and is still there. Start it under the clamp, wind it forward then back to under the clamp. Think that may be why it's still there
I used it on my boots and it lasted one day and it crack and it whood not let the thing idol down kep it at 3 grandhad to shut the bike down allmost hit someone
This self vulcanizing tape that we were talking about... I used to use it to wrap wires that stayed in fuel all the time inside fuel pods. This isn't normal electrical tape.

ok gus if fi understan this right ...if there are cracks that are vacume leeks the bike will run real bad but is that from the start or after about 3-4 miles running?
If they leak,m you will have a tough time maintaining a steady idle and synching the carbs is also a not-so-funny affair! You will be resetting synch after you fix the boot leak.

Down to one 1978 E. Stock air box with K&N filter, 81H pipes and carbs, 8500 feet elevation.
I'm doubtful all these carb boots are leaking thru surface cracks, the boots are 10mm thick and bonded to alloy manifolds inside the rubber, all these air-leak problems are likely coming from the carb/boot join or the boot/cylinder head join
