It outa do that no sweat, observed speed on my 80g hardbagger, 122. K1200 beemer was the "observing" bike. I had some more to go, but the pesky wobble was shown up, again.

Ain't that the truth! Now if you can hit a TRUE 200kph - 124mph (XS11 speedos are nowhere near accurate at that pace) - then you're doin' real well. Skinny light people have the advantage there. Lack of aerodynamic efficiency and BIG air-resistance soon puts the 'brakes' on any big naked bike..

ok,thanks for your help, another question ,,,i noticed that the forks on the 1980 sg has the front wheel spindle set at the front of the stantions,,was this used to improve the handling by giving a bit more trail,,,gus.

Nope,

Strictly styling! They changed the rake angle slightly by modifying the TT's so that the resultant TRAIL is the same as the Standard. I'd have to do a little more research into the height, but I think it also allowed the bike to sit just a little lower...more cruiser style!

OH YES the pesky, make that "the dangerous" WOBBLE that is inherent to these 11s. Tell me guys ... In your experienced opinions ...Is this strictly a fork issue or is it a combined fork / frame issue.

Hey Rob,

Our bikes stock have about 6" of trail, and IIRC about 26 degrees of rake, which makes the steering rather heavy=stable vs. modern sport bikes....yet "they" can go triple "bug 1.0" speed without wobbling!

So...I think it's a combination of forks/springs/dampening/ steering neck/frame/swingarm/rearshock elements that give the frame flex/hinge that can precipitate the "wobble". Also perhaps the larger front wheel which although it's probably considerably heavier than a sportbikes, doesn't spin as many rpm as the smaller sportbikes at the same speed, so it might not provide as good a centrifical stabilizing affect?

Hi Gus,
like TC says, the Special has different triple trees which move the fork tubes back the same distance the in-front-of-the-sliders axle moves the wheel forwards so the trail is identical on both models. Note that moving a bike's front wheel forwards will reduce the trail rather than increase it.
Mix'n'matching 'trees & fork legs between XS11 Specials & Standards is a low-budget way of reducing trail for sidecar work.

Ya know, at the time I had a 85MPH speedo. I guess my assumption the speedo on late model Beemer would be fairly accurate must be wrong. If you NAKED XS cannot hit 124mph then sumthins not right. Sure, GPS would come up with a more accurate number, but most of us only have our stock gauges to rely on to tell how fast we are going. I know what my rig will do and I am sticken to it.

I think it was also to give the special the appearance of longer forks. Yamaharley styling (like SWMOB's virago)

To answer your question. I have a 79 XS 1100 Special and not recently I had it at 136mph at redline in 5th on a lonely straight road, but then reality took over. I think if as much as a squirrel crossed my path I wouldn't be here writing to you. Good luck with your gimme, yammie (you know what I mean)
