  • 80 mph speedo,is this the top speed

i have just been given a 1980 sg xs eleven special,,it is a US import,,the speedo only reads 80mph ,having had no time to check it over and get it running yet i was wondering what are the specs for this machine,as you have not posted them yet,is the top speed only 80 or does it go past the end of the speedo to a more reasonable speed, other specs quoting 130 mph,am a bit confused with this, specs for this model would much be appreciated,,,engine number begins with 3jg,,,

Welcome aboard. Being a newby myself, I am just beginning to appreciate the power of these machines. No, 80 is only the cruising speed. It is capable of much more. The speedo was changed in either 80 or 81 to meet federal regulations. Earlier models had 160 on the speedo. A very powerful bike, be careful.

            "pegged out"

Well, let's see........ seems to me mine hits the little peg at what would be 85 at around 6 grand. But at 7.5 to 8.25 (depends on the road) 7.5 if my narrow hiney cant keep the bike from hopping over the seams in the pavement (ask trbig) 8.25 on the road between Rusk and Jacksonville TX....... I run outta ballz before the bike does..... each and every time. There's always more throttle than I have ballz.

Just be very careful cause it'll do more than you really need. And asphalt hurts even at 20.

Follow the links on the forums left hand side for specs on every model.

gusshaw- If you are looking at top speed it would depend on alot of factors.I had a mechanic who did drag racing regularly bring my XS 1100SG to 128.2 at a dragstrip. But that was with his skills and a very properly tuned worked motorcycle.Dont try to get it up to top speed on the road,go to a track and be careful.

                      It was a political thing.

                      Hi Gus,
I doubt you remember prohibition but sometimes governments do silly things.
The Carter administration's contributions to the list were the 55mph speed limit and speedos that only read up to 85mph. And that's what you have on your bike. A 140mph speedo from an earlier Yamaha will fit straight on. The 220kph speedo on my Canadian XS11SG seized up and I replaced it with a 140mph speedo from an early US XS650. Fear not, if it runs on all 4 your bike will bury that speedo needle in every gear except 1st & mebbe 2nd.

                        speedo

i live in the uk ,in early years it was a unwritten rule for bikes to be 125 bhp or less, that change a while back [when these super powerfull race looking bikes where in competion on whose was the fastest and most powerfull] and there is no bhp limit, also we had no emission rules apart from decibel which i think is 89 decibel, while in germany bikes where limited to a much lower bhp, my mate bought a brand new cb900f german model, this could not keep up with me ,two up with a crate of beer on the back,on a british z650b model, you guys where hammered by your gov with stupid emission controls, thanks for all your help,,,,gus.

I'm pleading dumb (Not too hard to do) When the officer pulls me over, I want to be able to point and show him that it's not possible to do more than 85 on these! lol. Some days it's just a really really FAST 85!

                            specs for this model (stock)

                            Top speed claimed 136 MPH
(Don't think my 80G can pull that, maybe 120)
95 HP, but at the rear wheel seems most are in the 70's to low 80's.

At speed, hit some "bad" pavement and be prepared for the "OH $h1t" feeling on a stock XS. Front end wobbles even with a fork brace. My hot rod XS does not have this problem, but suspension not stock and has two fork braces.
