      top speed on an xs

Well, back in 99, I raced my friend i his 87 Vette. The Vette had a shift kit and some performance chip in it too. I knew he was gonna come up from behind me, so I stayed in a low enough gear that when he got even with me I just gave that throttle a twist and off we went. At my last very quick glance down at the speedo, I was doing 140 in 4th gear. Yes, I have the famous 160 MPH speedo. Of course all he saw was my taillight. He said he hit 135 and the motor just had no more go. I really didn't expect the XS to be that stable at speed like that. Although I really didn't want to go any faster on that bike anyway. I've ridden a Kawasaki ZX-11 and had it up to 190 on the highway in NJ at 4am. WOO HOO! Unfortunately I ran out of highway or I would have taken it to the 200 mark. I had more than enough engine left to do so, quite easily. Was only doing like 6000rpm with approx. 5000 rpm to go before redline. I smiled so big I felt like I just had sex for the first time. LOL

I've looked into the Ninja sportbikes quite a bit. Seems like the ZX-11 and the Hayabusa are the "big dogs" out there fighting for the fastest and easiest to reach the 200 mark.

I personally have no business trying to even exceed the XS11's limits. It's scary enough to me at anything above 100. But I guess if you ever hit 140 on the XS, what's another 10 or 20?

Everytime I punch my XS in first and second gears, I get a big grin. It's even better when I haven't ridden in awhile and then do it - I seem to forget how broad the power band is on the XS.

I've only ridden one sportbike - it was an older Honda VFR.

i had mine up to 120 with no problem. i was on a nice, new 4 lane road. had a hefty wind to my back which cut down on the wind quite a bit. will try again sometime with better tires.

            This is an old topic.....

I talked to a guy today about his V-65. He said he did 170 on it. Do they have 6 gears?

I think 125 was the most I ever got out of my XS. Perhaps after a summer big bore kit and cylinder head work it will sing to the tune of 140 or so.

My big problem with my bikes is the altitude. The V-65 dude talked about 3rd gear wheelies. ?? Perhaps when I think I'm leaning out the carbs I'm not even close to as lean as they should be.

I put many miles on a V-65 and at high speeds the speedo is wildly optimistic. 5th and 6th gears are both overdrives and they will not pull redline in 6th and its highest top speed was actually in 4th gear, about 145 according to my calcs from the rpm's I was turning. I don't think V65's will turn over 150 and I would believe 170 only if I saw an official timing slip from SCTA or such. My recently revived 79 XS1100F with stock jetting and exhaust, no shield or bags, will pull redline in 5th which is around 135. Feels real strong above 100, this is at or near sea level. I do miss the Honda's tall 6th gear.

A friend of mine R. Pilgram had a 1979 xs that he turboed drove it the the Bonneville salt flats, ran the traps for 156mph run with about 1/3 throttle left. Second run cancelled due to high winds. He said that if he had had a fairing on his bike he probably could have reach xsive speeds over 200mph.

My first need for speed was on my tricked out TT500 125mph (courtesy of Victoria police radar) then got my 79 xs1100sf fully loaded, 140mph on speedometer 136mph from DPS State trooper
and only getting a ticket by the city police for exceeding a safe speed limit.

TT500? Is that Yamaha's dual sport bike of the late 70's - 80's? My XL500 Honda will do 70 if I run it *very* hard.

My uncle has a TT500 that he runs in Vintage class. It is also tricked out. I wouldn't doubt with the right gearing that it would do 120mph. I told him lets run it against my XS and his response was "Ok, but as long as we do it in the dirt."

My TT500 started out with 11:1 high compression piston, 440 cam with high compression valve springs and a 38 or 40mm mikuni carb. Exhaust pipe was 2" Jemco down pipe with fiberglass packing for racing. This was the "Standard" setup that we started for sup'in up all 3 styles SR500 (street) XT500 (on-off road) and TT500 (competition). Don't remember gearing setups but worked with the 1/2 milers and milers (short track racers) for a starting point and tested for best results. Next step to increase preformance was punch out cylinder to 605cc and restroke crank for additive HP and SPEED.

I test road a 1978 full dress XS11 that belonged to a shop I worked for 20 years ago. I had it up to 115 MPH but I ran out of road.

After servicing a FJ1100 the owner told me to take it out and see what it would do. It did 105 at the top of third gear and it felt like it was going to pull my guts out. I shifted into 5th at a little over 140 and chickend out for going any faster. The gut that owned it said it would do 160 and I think it probably would.

Isn't the FJ the spourt/touring version of Yamaha's new bike line?

I want to try the FZ1 for sure.

The FJ1100 was a 1986 model that was replaced with the FJ1200 a year or 2 later. I know there are newer and faster bikes than this but I'm not going to be riding them.
