  • Fastest (observed) speed on XS11

This has come up before..... but I was wondering if everyone will chime in (for fun) and post the maximum speed they have observed on their own XS11 and whether that was with stock setup or if there were changes:

    Mine, '80g, 45k miles, stock, 118mph

    Next?

80 SG (Midnight Specials are just better)! Stock, except aftermarket 4-2 mac (I think) exhaust.

      With a 300 pound rider on board . . .

135mph in south Texas. See SpiBikefest for the story. 135mph=8500 rpm (redline) on this bike. She was still pulling and I let off . . .

Just in case you think that was a fluke . . .

140mph on a local street here. See Wheelie (Oh my Gawd)! for that story.

<I'm sorry sweetie, I did not mean to run you over the red-line . . . it was just tha.... Oh. You understand? Want to go again? Well ALLRIGHT!>

85mph! My 1980 XS only goes to 85 according to the speedometer the little guage right next next to the speedometer keeps going up (FOR QUITE A WAYS TOO) but I was still only going 85! Honest! I did have the Special I sold up to 110 one day, (just testing it of course), Triumph only 115 so far...now the Bandit I had to 145 indicated....(it goes to 170).

          Oldfart,

It probably was! Elevation here is 6,660ft. But cyl number 2 is only giving 60-70psi. I could consider *that* yielding a considerable loss.

I ordered an 1179cc kit today. After that and a valve job, I should have a 4-cyl bike again.......

Late 1981 when bike was new i did 218kmh, on the gisborne melton road, my mate claims to have done 240kmh on a 1978 model with a J+R 4 into 1 on it sounds a lot to me but the very early models went hard and delivered very good fuel economy these are aussie models, yank ones may have been different ours came standered with oil coollers which made the 4 into 1 a mongrel to fit

a guy in an aston martin said he clocked me at 140 mph plus...allowing for errors i would say a healthy xs11 should top a genuine 130mph no problem. mine was a uk xs1.1s now heavily modified..

I've noticed that the specs page here on XS11 lists top speed, either calculated or observed seems to be around 135. I honestly don't know if I could ever get the carbs right for my altitude to hit that speed. Mine seems to run out around 118 or so, but I'm not getting full power from the engine when the leaner mains and lower engine compression factors are taken into account.

On another note, there really isn't anywhere safe around here to attempt those speed runs. There is plenty of long interstate in Utah, but I seem to be a highway patrol magnet in my car, and I'm sure they would suspend my license if they ever caught me driving XSively.

I get one of those "I'm gonna die" feelings when driving more than 100mph anyway.

But after I install the 1179 big bore kit and do a valve job, .... umm, I'm sure I'll be runnin' the old girl up again...

                  tee hee

ran out of road at 120 mph--was still accelerating though...

was starting to get AWFULLY WINDY-- i think it would be hard to hold on at 135 without any fairing

                    the ton +

Hit 115 on a stock special other than K&N factory box replacement filter. Got there before I knew it. Brought it right back down.
Bitch of it is, its so hard to look at the tach and calculate your speed when going that fast. Hard to look down at all.

                      Top Speed

First let me say its refreshing to see another Utah'n on here!

My speedo also only goes up to 85 mph, it also is a 80g. I would assume that ae7f your speedo has been changed? I tried to see just how fast I could go once, I max'd the speedo and kept going.
At what felt like 100+ mph I got the "I'm gonna die" feeling and backed off.

I much prefer the car for fast speed's (alot more metal in a crash)
but that can be good and bad! also the bugs don't imbed themselves in your face!

Another thing? I know I have seen a thread somewhere about changing speedo's to a higher mph, what years had the higher mph? and are they interchangable?

On a lighter note, why do helmets have a DOT impact safety rating?

I mean the guy who helped me with my new helmet this year thought it was a great selling point that a certain helmet had a DOT rating for a safe impact of up to 200 mph!

I couldn't help but think GREAT! if I hit something at 200 mph my head would be fine! its just the rest of my body that would be MUSH!

I believe the 79's and 78's had the 160mph speedos. They are interchangable (special for special, standard for standard). I think there was an extra ground wire on the one I swapped to my '80 SG.

And of course the DOT rating is so they will have an intact container to carry you home in.
