    Hi Fred

You can test that regulator pretty easy do a search from the top of the page its been discussed several times .Its hard to say exactly for sure if its bad It needs to be tested tho to eliminate
    other problems

How do you know it's not charging?

Think I've read that the XJ generator uses "brushes".
If one sticks or there to worn can cause problems.

Don't go chasing your tail if you really have a bad battery. They can fool you!

when the green wire is disconnected its voltage raises to bat....
when connected it stays at .78?
            between brown and green...4.5 ohms...
between all white wires ....9 ohms

              easy test

              right side cover off
              Start bike
multi-meter pos leed to pos post on selinoid
              black lead to ground (frame)
2500/3000 rpm should have about 14V

if less may have trouble in XJ land

Had just read a thread this morning relating to XJ charging system and now can't find it. Geezer pointed the way to trouble shoot it very well.
