  • Okay i've been tossing around the idea of building a swingarm and picking up a chain drive kit. But where in the hell is everyone getting there spoke wheels at? I can't seem to find a set for a decent price (and by decent i mean in 200$ range).

Also i don't think i'm gonna hardtail it. I want to run a monoshock setup under the seat so you can't see it. I dont like the looks of the zrx11 swingarm looks out of place on the xs frame. But yeah, still kicken around the idea. I want a fat tire bobber and this seems to be the most logical way to get one. Since the bike's already paid off.
Yes it's a damn nice bike, yes it's in REALLY good condition, yes it would be a shame to chop it, BUT damn how cool would it look with ape hangers?

I don't know about the spoke wheels but I agree with the out of place look of the ZRX swing arm on the XS. That's why I got the other kit. it came with a traditional type swing arm.

        • Measured with a tape measure that was "eye balled" center to center on both. ... The ZRX swing arm is 21 inches give or take a 1/4 inch compared to the XS swing arm which is 16.5 inches give or take a 1/4 of an inch.

            • Just about anything can be made to work. It really depends on how much time one has to put into the project, how much equipment and tools are available and how much cash is to be spent.

              • so i should have no problems with a chain drive conversion when i shove this motor into a rigid chopper frame.

and i can use a rear xs650 yam wheel with this setup, correct?
or any other wheel for that matter i spose?

                • You could put up to a 220 tire if you do a rigid frame any bigger, you need a custom spaced front sprocket or a jack-shaft. I personally wouldn't trust a homemade swingarm unless I knew the welder or did it myself....You could find yourself crabwalking your XS after you install it if it wasn't done corectly on a jig. The ZRX swingarm will not flex by it's design and is super lightweight, albeit not aesthetically pleasing to some on our XS11 frames. I like Scappod's look. You could also paint it Gloss black and match it up with the XS tube frame.....To each his own though

                        • especially after the shaft drive horror stories

Ummm.. HUH?? I guess you better not look for any chain drive horror stories then. You'll get more HP to the ground with a chain drive, but the shaft drive is a MUCH smoother and more reliable drive system.

                          • chain drive

Actually the shaft is less maintenance, but the chain drive swap is much more smooth since you get rid of the shaft clunk of the 2 right turn bevels, the thick hub drive rubbers in the chain driven wheels are also much better than the skinny/old hard rubber that is in the rear shaft hub too....Sorry, But I am not going to make any more bolt on units for a while since I am machining parts to build a Corvette Powered 944 at the moment... This winter I will make some more though....

                              • swingarm

Well, depending on your skills, you could get a ZRX11 swingarm and the spacers then make some easy offset shockmounts up top.....Or if you really want to go crazy a Triumph ST or a Ducati SSSA will drop in with some custom spacers as well, If I had to do it over again, I'd go with the Ducati swingarm from the 748,998 (whatever even number bikes were) because the rear monoshock tab is built in from the factory, and would be easy to weld in the upper shock mount to the XS11 frame like I did. The Triumph swingarm can take a Ducati wheel and vice versa. Also I am running a 530 size O-ring chain and it is very quiet, but not as quiet as the shaft. I'm curious how long that SSSA from the shaft Goldwing will hold up being driven upside down. there was a lenthy discussion about hypoid gears going backwards and their longevity on the Porsche site......Although It could be straight cut gears, I'm not sure
