    thank you sir,

    yes i was thinking the swingarm is like the steering head only sideways, and my clymer says 70 ft lbs, oh boy lots, anyhow, i can see how if the shaft went all the way thru, the turns should shift the whole arm left or right,but it dopesn't

    the way it is, they have to be turned in unison, while keeping the bearings inside tighten to spec,

      So...going through all of the drama to keep the bearings from coming loose during adjustment, is there a way to grease them without watching ball bearings roll to every corner of the garage floor?

        i don't know the book says they where ball bearings but when i open'er up, they were tapered bearing, nice.

              thanks again gents, i put it back together, and the wobble is gone at 80+ mph.

              i read somewhere anything can cause the wiggles, and in my case repacking the steering and swingarm bearing, thighten it up, the coutersteer goes straight to the rear tire, instead of into the slop of the swingarm frame junction,

              i think that pendulum effect or hinge from that slop ocillates at a freqeuncy above 80 mph, the handleing is getting better and better yeah!

                Regarding the pivot shaft torque, I look it up in my Yamaha factory manual and in the repair section 5 it has the right values (43-52 in/lb for the shaft, 72 ft/lbs for the nut) but in section 7 in the torque value tables there is only one entry for the swingarm:

                Pivot shaft -- 72.3 ft/lbs

                So, it looks like Yamaha screwed up and Clymers took the values from the tables!

                  I remember

                  I remember my last tango with attempting to adjust a swing arm
                  I broke two hi quality hex wrenchs and a hex socket snapped off as well before I cussed and kicked the swing arm and went for a drink!

                    yes ken gave me the values, nice and easy and don't bind the bearings, and i had a hunch the adjustments were as critical as the steering head, i have a tendency to overkill my fasteners,

                    and now that i broke my axle pinch front stud with my ebay torgue wrench i don't trust that either, maybe i gotta stop lifting weights...

                      Added to the list of things-to-do...

                      I need to quit reading this forum. I keep finding things I really need to do.

                      I should finish the front end this weekend. The other day, I grabbed the swing arm and gave it a couple of yanks. There is definitely slop in there. Then I noticed a discussion on U-joint service and found this thread. I''m not looking forward to dealing with all those needle bearings, but I'm sure they still have the original grease in them.

                      Ah, well. Ya gotta do what ya gotta do....

                        just wanted to let you know, if you read about bob jones at marriam cycles, he says the joint never fails, and when i took mine apart, it was smooth, and altho the grease with a little old and thin, it was still servicable, the seals did their job.and the needle bearinngs never flew apart on me.

                        i busted clips taking it apart, and had to get a good one from andreas, (it felt the same) since i went thru the trouble to regrease i put that one in and canibilized clips from the new joint.

                        when it was all done and said, i don't think it was worth the trouble, even if you are in there to grease and adjust the swingarm, unless you hear something or it's broken or it has over 100k miles or something like that.

                        or you just take comfort in knowing you went for it and don't have to do it or think about it again for a while.

                          Sure. it's just one of those things that if you've never done it, you probably need to!

                          I personally think it's worth the peace of mind to do it at every rear tire change.
