  • mmm... Jetting again

I got my new carbs the other day(thanks Andreas). It has 155 mains. That seems a little much to be putting on a stock 79F.
    A) Should I get 137 mains and where do I get them?
    B) The screws over the idle jets won't come off. What is the best way to remove them or should I just run a bunch of cleaner through them?

One a side note: I just saw a commercial for MMI (motorcycle mechanic institute). Kinda weird because my carbs are spread out all over the living room floor. It did not take a whole "Institute" to let me work on my bikes.

There is a bike shop on Hwy 10 in Hurst that has main jets. It's called The Motorcycle Shop. It's on 10 and Hurstview, just west of the Fun n Sun boat shop. The owners name is Ricky. I do a lot of business with him.

Ok thats good 1 down. on furthur inspection, the #2 Idle mikture screw is broken off in the carb. There is about 1-2mm still stuck in there. I have a 2 spare screws in my parts but what is the best way to get that piece out? I don't want to knock it down from the top into the carb because I don't want to enlarge the hole very much. I don't have a drill bit small enough. I filed the broken end of the mixture screw and tried to push the broken end out but that did not work. I will try a steel needle next. I am amaze at how good a shape the carbs are. They look brand new. I am shooting to get these done by monday. Well let me know if you have any suggestions, I will keep updating. Thanks for the info everyone.

            Andrew,

There's a tech tip on how to remove a broken pilot screw tip, along with several recent threads that have been posted discussing the same thing. Good Luck.

I don't have any pics like that and all of my sewing needles(machine and hand) broke or bent. I just bought a hand drill bit setup with those very small gauges (74+) I was thinkign about just hand drilling out the tip. If you get any other ideas about what to use for a pick, let me know.

                  Getting picky now???

Tried several things to get broken needles out.
Made this out of a "tap" (hard steel).
Placed in vise grip and tapped grip with a wrench.
Popped broken needle out first try.

                  btw
Plier goodie seems like a good idea, didn't work tho,
                  needs a little refinement.

I think that is pretty standard jetting for carbs used in those small race cars XS motors found their way into.

I picked up several carbs sets from a guy that was getting out of the racing business and they all had 155s in them.

Ok well after much work, and I managed to get it out. I had grab a push pin with pliers and hammer on the pliers. Nothing else worked. I had to take a break because of a 101+ fever. Now, I am off to look at some new jets. Since this is on a 79F, should the pilot fuel jet be a 45 or 42.5?
