I am retain the shaft drive. I am focusing on handling improvements and not that concerned about ultimate power. My project goal is to keep the classic XS Standard look, but ride on R1 inverted forks, excellent brakes and radial tires.

I am fabricating my own swingarm and relocating the stock swingarm pivot locations. The drive shaft will be on the outside of the swingarm pivot.

I have a FJ1200 mono I would like to incorporate into the whole thing, but not sure there is room for it and a battery.

Just stretch the swing arm a little bit to get that mono in. I know you trying to maintain stock look, but you shouldnt need that much more room.

Den, sounds like the drive box has to come out an inch or two and the 5 1/2 inch rim to match the alignment and somehow matching the wide rim to the rear shaftdrive hub. To fit 180tyre that's 185mm across the swingarm at the tyre position for comfortable clearance, it's not that much wider than normal, my modded swingarm is over 200mm across and doesn't look much different than the original.

Hi guys, what do you think about a 1 to 1.5 inch spacer put between the middle drive and crankcase, then lengthening the swingarm pivot points accordingly. The machinist working on my driveshaft said he could also lengthen the middle gear shaft. then you could add another 3 inches (75mm) to your tire? Just a Brainer...

To get a 180+ tire to fit, I am spacing the middle drive out 30mm (1.18"). The middle drive shaft only engages about an inch. The only real reliable way (IMHO) is to machine a 30mm longer middle drive shaft. Now that is not trivial, but not impossible either.

I was able to get a 140 on my XS by spacing the drive cog on the wheel (at the shock mounts) and adjusting the swing arm to the left. A 150 would fit, but I could not adjust the swing arm far enough to the left to center the wheel.

I finally came to the conclusion that If I was going to get into modifying the frame and swing arm, I might as will go big.

The R1 rear wheel w/tire and rotor weigh 10lbs less than the XS rear wheel w/tire and rotor. The front is about the same. The front (inverted) forks of the R1 are much more ridged and again weigh less. I am looking at over a 30lb reduction in weight and much improved handling. AND, it is fun!

              middle gear shaft

That is my thought on it as well. The shaft extention won't be a problem, just the frame widening where the swingarm pivot points are will be tough. They need to be widened as much as your middle drive spacer!

Do you guys think this will work? for my belt drive purpose, I was going to get a machined middle drive shaft long enough to mount the pulley where the chrome cover currently is on the middle gear housing. Run the belt out side the frame to a custom swing arm or possibly modded stock(Not XS). Put sealed bearings in and a new one right inside the housing after the lock nut. The only problem I can see is foot clearance. probably move the foot controls forward. What do ya think?

                  would probably work

I initially thought of that route when i started to do the chain drive conversion before I found better gearing in a Final Drive. It would work, you will have fun with the swingarm though...chop

Both of you are on the same track as I am. A simple way to handle the swing arm pivot width is to flip the pivots around. They will adjust from the center of the bike out. This completely clears the way for wider drives/ wheels.

I am designing a frame jig table to make sure things come out square.

                      copy cat

Can I copy your setup? That way I can just set back on this one and watch So you are gonna locate the drive shaft tunnel outside the frame? you could then get an Avon 250-300 to fit!!!!!!

                        On the same track

Hey denny, Just a nice piece of info I found while doing my final drive research: the 1100 virago drive shaft is 2.5 inches longer than the xs11's (and will fit right up). I kept this in mind because it would allow the swing-arm to move rearward for a monoshock without BATTERY BOX interference. Matter of fact you could hack the virago swingarm with monoshock(like the U.K. guy).....chop

                          Swing Arm

I want my swing arm as long as I can get it to reduce acceleration jacking without distoring the XS lines.

I discovered that the swing arm pivots are about 3/4" rear ward of the center of the drive ujoint. By moving the pivots 3/4" forward of the ujoint center, I gain 1.5" without changing the slip joint travel or wheel base. In addition, I want to move the rear axle back another inch to provide a total of 2.5 swing arm stretch.

                            easy way

then the 2.5 inch longer virago shaft would be perfect. So why not just use the 1100 virago swingarm?

I don't have one (Virago swing arm), but the drive shaft is a great idea.

this is an ooooold post, I know... but I'm going really similar and had a few questions... A. how did you end up mounting that read fender? B. what did you do for brake ligh/tag mount/signal mounts? C. what bars did you use? I'm thinking of going clipons but need to find the best approach.
