    Traitor!!! 1982 cbx 1000

    Hi XS 11 Friends,

I'M A TRAITOR! My latest acquisition is NOT a Yamaha

Unfortunately, Yamaha never made a 6-Cylinder.

When I was a teenager, I took the liberty of sitting on a new CBX in the showroom of my local Honda dealer. I was IN LOVE!!! Unfortunately, my seated position on that bike was extremely short-lived. The showroom manager very quickly dislodged me from the bike! Obviously, a young skinny 16-17 year old was not capable of purchasing such a machine. The manager knew it and so did I. I swore that SOMEDAY I would own one of these beautiful machines. Forty years later..... I FINALLY OWN ONE!

Safely tucked away with his "YAMAHA COUSINS"

Sorry, had to do it.... Couldn't pass it up for the price and I've dreamed of one of these for more than 40 years.

You have committed a sin which shall not be forgiven by the Yamaha family! Sometime soon a group of Shaolin Munks will mysteriously appear in your garage. Don't bother calling the police, there's nothing they can do to help...

I'm getting ready to commit a sin myself. I'll be picking up an '80's Suzuki road bike of some kind from my BIL. The reason I'm getting it? It's FREE!! All I have to do is get it on the trailer and bring it home the 500+ miles. As I need to go to Santa Cruz, CA in August, it's on the way. I'll drop the trailer at his place, and load the bike and bring it home on the way back.

The biggest problem is that bike is already fixed up. What are you going to do with yourself?!? (Buy another bike? )

        Congratulations! It's beautiful.

Thanks Mike. But, it's not entirely fixed up..... There are a few deficiencies that need to be addressed.....
            • The brake lines appear to be OEM 1982 - New replacement SS from GoodRidge have already been ordered. New pads received yesterday.
              • I'll ride it, but VERY LIMITED until the brake line, pads, and rotor are up-to-snuff!!
            • The rear rotor is TOTAL CRAP... - Coordinating a replacement with an e-bay seller today.
            • The rear OEM air shock was replaced with aftermarket - Needs adjustment as a MINIMUM but I have the original and may attempt a rebuild and put it back in.
            • Front forks need new seals - Previous owner provided the new replacements so that's a plus. No air assist until seals are replaced.
            • A very SLIGHT hesitation in the mid-range.... EXTREMELY slight, likely just a carb tune & balance (X6 Carbs )
            • Tires are crap Shinko's and will need to head for the garbage as soon as possible. Michelin offers tires to fit the rear 18".
            • Seat is a crap Corbin that favors the driver eliminating some of the space needed for Muffy. We had this problem with a Corbin on my FJ1200 and my seat guy completely re-did the cushion and cover. He'll be tasked with the same for the CBX. The only advantage to the Corbin is the backrest, otherwise I'd toss it in the trash and use the OEM seat the PO provided.
            • Not certain when (or if) the valves were adjusted last. This requires a special tool (yet to find) and REMOVING THE ENGINE to accomplish.... Without frame down tubes, the engine is a stressed member of the frame "system" the attachment points on the head preclude pulling the valve cover unless the motor is disconnected from the backbone. There are actually FOUR cams as there are two per side (intake & exhaust) that are coupled together in the middle. Drive of the cams is also unique with an extra chain and other goodies.
            • Rear pull bar is missing. This is a 1982 ONLY item and hard to find. Found one complete at a CBX stripper in Florida - $400 - OUCH!
            • The airbox lid is missing, not a huge problem but a problem none the less. Only the 1981 & 1982 will fit. Haven't found one yet....
            • Right turn signal was in-operative but I already fixed that & several other SMALL issues.

Otherwise, it runs and idles perfectly... I balanced a nickel on the engine case and it stayed perfectly position from 1k to 5k rpm! SMOOTH BABY SMOOTH!

Nancy and I did some cleaning and aluminum polishing today. Some areas of the bike (under saddle bags, between rear fender & motor) have likely NEVER been cleaned.

Muffy was a real trooper today helping with the cleaning & polishing.

I consider "Cleaning" to be an "Inspection Process". As a certified TPM Instructor, this is STEP #1 or the TPM System... I apply these principles to all my endeavors.

Once a THOROUGH inspection of EVERYTHING is completed, the bike will be on the shelf UNTIL AFTER THE Vintage Yamaha Rally!!! However, All parts will be ordered and ready for October & November.

What a bike! Congrats... I was going to make a comment about doing the valves on it... but seems you are well aware of that fun.

                Hi Mike,
Thank you.... But the bike is NOT already fixed up! Although the exterior is quite nice (it does have a few blemishes). Under the covers there were problems galore.

Unfortunately, although I planned to just "Order Parts" and wait until after the rally, some work just had to be done......

                The brakes were absolute CRAP:
                • Brake lines date coded 6/1981
                  • Replaced with Goodridge SS all around!
                • Rear Rotor - Trashed Measure 5.8mm with a 6mm limit.
                  • Replaced with new drilled aftermarket
                • Fluid Looked like MUD
                  • Complete FLUSH of masters and calipers
                • All pads looked suspect but not horrible
                  • Were likely replaced recently - Replaced 'em again anyway!!!
While I have the ENTIRE front end off...
                • Steering head bearing condition unknown - Suspicious never serviced...
                  • Verified! Never Serviced
                  • Replaced the bearings with new!
                Front Forks
                • Leaking
                • Won't Hold ANY Air
                • Watching them DRIP down the back legs.
                  • Completely cleaned, new Seals, new dust seals, new fluid (of course).
                  • Hold 10# of recommended air.... feel great now!

Obviously NEVER EVER EVER Serviced in 44 Years

Partial Re-Assembly with new bearings - Bearing grease is a MESS to deal with....(Mike knows this well!)

Discovered a REALLY F-Up Right Front Caliper Mounting Bracket.... Thought I was SUNK....(More on that in a minute).

Had to CLEAN the rear end to within an inch of it's like....NEVER BEEN PROPERLY CLEANED!!!

REBALANCED the wheel after installing new rotor.... Should have done the front too but kinda forgot...Wanted a wheel back on as support for the CBX is limited by one jack stand.

Muffy & I did 150+ miles on it between yesterday and today....

FDR Park.... About 40 miles +/- from home and a favorite picnic spot.....

More on our crazy good luck in next post.....

                  CBX Parts.... CRAZY Good Fortune.....

For those that THINK XS11 or other Yamaha parts are hard to find.... Try finding parts for a bike, produced for only 5-years in a total quantity of ~20,000 units WORLDWIDE. On top of that figure, many parts from the earlier models will NOT fit the later models (81 & 82) and one of two items are one year only (i.e. my missing rear pull bar is 1982 ONLY). All the tanks for every year have some differences too.....

Anyway, I noticed a post from Fort Mitchell Alabama for a batch of 1982 CBX parts. The post was 15 weeks old... But, I reached out and the guy hadn't sold ANYTHING. He had some inquiries from folks overseas but they all had crazy payment plans and wanted free shipping etc. "Robert" was not that stupid. We went to Fort Mitchell yesterday and took a look. Robert's wife was pushing hard that this stuff HAD TO GO. Robert even deflected the pricing to "Bea" his wife asking what she wanted. As far as Bea was concerned I COULD TAKE IT ALL to just get it gone... NO Charge.

Obviously, I wasn't going to do that. There was real value here INCLUDING THE MISSING AIR CLEANER CAP!!! I laid out a small pile of parts and offered $150 - Accepted! Then I gathered a few more parts and as far as Bea was concerned I could have them too.... I provided another $100 Robert said.... go ahead and take whatever you want!!!

What did I end up with?
                  • Both Front Calipers & brackets
                  • Fork Tube Lowers - Perfect OEM Paint and Great Condition.
                  • OEM Seat - Great Condition (Shown in photos above as the Corbin is getting recovered)
                  • Front Fender - Fantastic Condition (Unfortuantely Wrong Color)
                  • Saddle Bags & Full Mounting Hardware (Again, Unfortunately Wrong Color) Hardware is perfect and mine has some pitting
                  • Aftermarked RIFLE Windscreen & Mount - Hightly Sought After (Again, Wrong Color Base).
                  • Speedo - Seem the PO of Robert's bike changed the mileage.... That was news to Robert!
                  • AirBox Extension WITH THE HARD TO FIND COVER!
                  • Fuel supply Octopus (Honda's Version) with all the lines & splitters.
                  • Bag of misc. hardware & brakets...
It seem I mostly end up with the "Short end of the stick" or the "Low card in the deck". Yesterday was all ACES!

Turns out, my right front caliper mounting bracket was re-drilled and helicoiled totally incorrectly and on an ANGLE. UGH. On top of that, the lower mounting bolt was stripped. THe RF caliper was held by NOTHING!! Had I not made this deal with Robert & Bea, the bike would NOT be operational.

I'll describe the experience of riding this MONSTER in a subsequent post.... Don't worry guys, I'm a YAMAHA guy forever.... The XS11 ("E" MODEL ANYWAY) would roast this thing!

                  Best Regards,
                  Kurt
