Traitor!!! 1982 cbx 1000

Hi XS 11 Friends,

I'M A TRAITOR! My latest acquisition is NOT a Yamaha



Unfortunately, Yamaha never made a 6-Cylinder.

When I was a teenager, I took the liberty of sitting on a new CBX in the showroom of my local Honda dealer. I was IN LOVE!!! Unfortunately, my seated position on that bike was extremely short-lived. The showroom manager very quickly dislodged me from the bike! Obviously, a young skinny 16-17 year old was not capable of purchasing such a machine. The manager knew it and so did I. I swore that SOMEDAY I would own one of these beautiful machines. Forty years later..... I FINALLY OWN ONE!

I'm getting ready to commit a sin myself. I'll be picking up an '80's Suzuki road bike of some kind from my BIL. The reason I'm getting it? It's FREE!! All I have to do is get it on the trailer and bring it home the 500+ miles. As I need to go to Santa Cruz, CA in August, it's on the way. I'll drop the trailer at his place, and load the bike and bring it home on the way back.

The biggest problem is that bike is already fixed up.

Thanks Mike. But, it's not entirely fixed up..... There are a few deficiencies that need to be addressed.....

• The brake lines appear to be OEM 1982 - New replacement SS from GoodRidge have already been ordered. New pads received yesterday.
  • I'll ride it, but VERY LIMITED until the brake line, pads, and rotor are up-to-snuff!!
• The rear rotor is TOTAL CRAP... - Coordinating a replacement with an e-bay seller today.
• The rear OEM air shock was replaced with aftermarket - Needs adjustment as a MINIMUM but I have the original and may attempt a rebuild and put it back in.
• Front forks need new seals - Previous owner provided the new replacements so that's a plus. No air assist until seals are replaced.
• A very SLIGHT hesitation in the mid-range.... EXTREMELY slight, likely just a carb tune & balance (X6 Carbs )
• Tires are crap Shinko's and will need to head for the garbage as soon as possible. Michelin offers tires to fit the rear 18".
• Seat is a crap Corbin that favors the driver eliminating some of the space needed for Muffy. We had this problem with a Corbin on my FJ1200 and my seat guy completely re-did the cushion and cover. He'll be tasked with the same for the CBX. The only advantage to the Corbin is the backrest, otherwise I'd toss it in the trash and use the OEM seat the PO provided.
• Not certain when (or if) the valves were adjusted last. This requires a special tool (yet to find) and REMOVING THE ENGINE to accomplish.... Without frame down tubes, the engine is a stressed member of the frame "system" the attachment points on the head preclude pulling the valve cover unless the motor is disconnected from the backbone. There are actually FOUR cams as there are two per side (intake & exhaust) that are coupled together in the middle. Drive of the cams is also unique with an extra chain and other goodies.
• Rear pull bar is missing. This is a 1982 ONLY item and hard to find. Found one complete at a CBX stripper in Florida - $400 - OUCH!
• The airbox lid is missing, not a huge problem but a problem none the less. Only the 1981 & 1982 will fit. Haven't found one yet....
• Right turn signal was in-operative but I already fixed that & several other SMALL issues.

Otherwise, it runs and idles perfectly... I balanced a nickel on the engine case and it stayed perfectly position from 1k to 5k rpm! SMOOTH BABY SMOOTH!

Nancy and I did some cleaning and aluminum polishing today. Some areas of the bike (under saddle bags, between rear fender & motor) have likely NEVER been cleaned.


Muffy was a real trooper today helping with the cleaning & polishing.

I consider "Cleaning" to be an "Inspection Process". As a certified TPM Instructor, this is STEP #1 or the TPM System... I apply these principles to all my endeavors.

Once a THOROUGH inspection of EVERYTHING is completed, the bike will be on the shelf UNTIL AFTER THE Vintage Yamaha Rally!!! However, All parts will be ordered and ready for October & November.

What a bike! Congrats... I was going to make a comment about doing the valves on it... but seems you are well aware of that fun.
