XS Folks,
REMEMBER THESE?
This is my 1970 Honda CT 70 - 3-speed Automatic.
Looks like I've got only a handful of projects left to complete on my XS (some are big) but I'm waiting on parts to arrive. Today, I'm gonna try to get my CT 70 running. Last time I tried to start 'er was about 2 months ago and she didn't want to start. It needs a top-end rebuild.
I picked this little guy up a couple years ago for $300 (running ) and did I complete rebuild and repaint of the body and frame. Replaced the seat & etc. but I did not dig into the motor.
A pic from the rebuild process......
Much like our XS11's these are getting pretty hard to find. If you have one, you probably already know folks are paying up to 3X as much for one of these as they are for decent driver quality XS11.
Check e-bay.... You'll see 'em selling for $5000++ in pristine condition. Guess it's old guys like me that remember them from childhood. Again like our XS11's the mini-bikes commanding the big big bucks are those that have not been modified with aftermarket parts and Chinese replacement engines. Those modified bikes don't get 1/4 of what their owners have spent on them.
Personally, I never had one of these as a kid but my big brother did. My dad bought me the Yamaha CHAMP (not Chappy, CHAMP). It Yamaha's knock-off and a pretty darn poor one at that. It had the tank under the seat like the CT but had a low pipe and poor ground clearance. I haven't seen one of those CHAMPS in 30 years! I was extremely disappointed when my dad came home with the Yamaha instead of the Honda. All the "COOL KIDS" had the CT70.
Since I was successful with pulling the head and turning the Ugly Duckling into a pretty nicely running machine, the head on this CT70 is about to get pulled and rebuilt as well. I use to be semi-active on a Honda Mini-Bikes bulletin board where I can get a little help if needed these things have quite a following!!!
My oldest grandchild is nearly 4 so he should be able to ride it in a couple years.
Who else remembers these little bikes? Still got one?
If you see one cheap snatch it up! This is a really fun little project although I have no intention of ever selling mine, one of these could be a good little money maker if you've got just a little time and dedication.
