  • Honda CT70 - Remember These?

    XS Folks,

    REMEMBER THESE?

This is my 1970 Honda CT 70 - 3-speed Automatic.

Looks like I've got only a handful of projects left to complete on my XS (some are big) but I'm waiting on parts to arrive. Today, I'm gonna try to get my CT 70 running. Last time I tried to start 'er was about 2 months ago and she didn't want to start. It needs a top-end rebuild.

I picked this little guy up a couple years ago for $300 (running ) and did I complete rebuild and repaint of the body and frame. Replaced the seat & etc. but I did not dig into the motor.

A pic from the rebuild process......

Much like our XS11's these are getting pretty hard to find. If you have one, you probably already know folks are paying up to 3X as much for one of these as they are for decent driver quality XS11.

Check e-bay.... You'll see 'em selling for $5000++ in pristine condition. Guess it's old guys like me that remember them from childhood. Again like our XS11's the mini-bikes commanding the big big bucks are those that have not been modified with aftermarket parts and Chinese replacement engines. Those modified bikes don't get 1/4 of what their owners have spent on them.

Personally, I never had one of these as a kid but my big brother did. My dad bought me the Yamaha CHAMP (not Chappy, CHAMP). It Yamaha's knock-off and a pretty darn poor one at that. It had the tank under the seat like the CT but had a low pipe and poor ground clearance. I haven't seen one of those CHAMPS in 30 years! I was extremely disappointed when my dad came home with the Yamaha instead of the Honda. All the "COOL KIDS" had the CT70.

Since I was successful with pulling the head and turning the Ugly Duckling into a pretty nicely running machine, the head on this CT70 is about to get pulled and rebuilt as well. I use to be semi-active on a Honda Mini-Bikes bulletin board where I can get a little help if needed these things have quite a following!!!

My oldest grandchild is nearly 4 so he should be able to ride it in a couple years.

Who else remembers these little bikes? Still got one?

If you see one cheap snatch it up! This is a really fun little project although I have no intention of ever selling mine, one of these could be a good little money maker if you've got just a little time and dedication.

Many years ago in Missouri, one of my neighbors had a CT70 ... I remember thinking how cool it looked ...

But I never did get to ride it ...

The bike looks great, Kurt ... did you match an original Honda factory color for the re-spray?

      Thanks Pal,
Believe it or not this little bike has NO PROBLEM draggin' by old butt around and reaching it's top speed of about 40. It's a shame you didn't get to ride your neighbor's bike. It's a HOOT.

No, it's not the factory color. But it is almost dead-on for the factory color of my big brother Eric's CT70. Eric passed away and this little bike reminds me of him (when my big sister first saw it she started crying her eyes out). When Eric got his I was only 6 or 7. I don't remember much of that time but I do remember how happy and excited he was when our dad brought home that blue CT70 attached to the bumper of our station wagon, Eric was about 12 or so. This bike will get passed down to one of my three sons.......

This one was actually gold & rust (& more rust) when I got it. Turns out my T/A is an extremely comparable color so it got painted Pontiac Martinique Blue. If I didn't already have a comparable blue I would have bought some to mimic my brother's bike.

        Kurt,

Yeah, that little bike sure looked like it would be a riot to ride ... and it still does!!

Sorry to hear about your brother's passing ... I'm sure your CT brings back some great memories of him.

And it's really cool that you'll be passing down the CT to your son ...

Almost bought one when I was looking for a bumper bike for my truck/camper combo. But I got a smoking deal on a AT1 that the electric start and turnsignals were still on it and worked. Tad faster than a CT. They were a absolute hoot to ride around on and seemed almost unstoppable. And if it did bog down, you just jump off and drag it out One of my boating buddies still has a mint Honda Mini Trail. Last time I saw it, it was pushing 25 miles on the clock.

I had one when I was a kid!

My first bike. My dad bought it for me for Christmas.
It was freezing cold that Christmas morning in Oklahoma when I found it under the tree, but I didn't care! Couldn't wait to ride it all over my grandfather's 20 acre pasture! Best Christmas...ever! Rode it all day, every day... sunup to sundown.

Why do ya think I love motorcycles so much??

I loved mine. Those little 70's would run pretty good too!
            Great trail bikes.

Love the paint job you did! Awesome!

Man... After seeing yours it makes me wanna be 10 again............

'Course, it was just me and my one year old brother living on a farm out in the country.
Had no idea back then I actually was one of "the cool kids!"

You can be 10 again.... GO GET ONE! You can also watch YOUR Grand-Kids drive all over on one too just like your grandpa did!!

I managed to the 70 started on Sunday. Took several dozen kicks which should really only be one or two kicks. It's got new points & condenser but I think she's a little low on compression or needs a valve adjustment...Haven't spent much time investigating.

The bike only has 894 miles on the speedo but that's probably quite a bit for a little tiny bike. It also wasn't taken too good care of either (like my Ugly Duck). All inclusive I've spent about $750 on the CT70 with the most expensive part being the replacement seat at about $120. I still need to replace the handle bars ($70 +/-) but haven't gotten around to it. They're pretty rusty. Just about any part on these little bikes is available re-pop.

If I see another one for cheap I'm gonna grab it. There are guys over on the Mini-Trail site (lilhonda.com) that have a DOZEN+ of them..... Kinda like some of the guys here with a whole bunch of XS11's

                        Brcree,
Thanks for the note on dratv.com, I will check them out. I used a bunch of parts from "Northeast Vintage Cycle" and had good luck with them for these CT70 parts. I don't know the web address off the top of my head but google should provide that with ease.

I will do a top-end rebuild soon on this bike, right after the XS is 110%. The parts are soooo tiny in there!

The earlier models (69, 70, 71, 72) seem to command the highest resale prices (models with speedo integral to the headlamp). Although they all can fetch some unreal resale prices those are the best and hardest to find.
