    Ouch

I've dropped the bike (gently) twice already. Once trying to put it on the kickstand and the other time trying to use the kickstarter. I've dinged myself too, got some sexy engine burn on the inside of my calf bc I'm in track pants, but the Good News is, I finally figured out the clutch! Every time I would want to go in 1st gear it died. So i held onto it and released it slowly and I was off. 50 yards down my dirt road and back. I went to 2nd and was like too fast, back to 1st.

This is the course I was planning to take. I dont get how it upgrades an m1 to m2. In other words taking this course (when I have my m1) means I dont have to take an exam to have the m2? Seems strange

            Hi Blank Slate,
Graduated licence structure explained here http://www.ontario.ca/page/get-motor...ence#section-1

You have M1 which allows you to ride alone in daylight. (untrained and untested...scary as hell ) you need this to be able to take the course.

1st Course is 2 1/2 days the last afternoon is the 1st TEST
Conducted on closed course which you have been training on.
            Pass and you get M2
Within 5 years you have to take 2nd TEST. On the road with chase car watching. To get full M licence.
You will learn valuable information that will make you a safer rider and add to your lifetime enjoyment of motorcycle riding.

Thanks Phil. That's pretty cool that I can get to m2 after passing this course. First I gotta do the m1, I don't have that yet either.

I think your attempt failed. Keep at it. The electric leg was an afterthought on that motorcycle. Kickstarting is often required.

I highly recommend a course, it will give you a solid foundation and the confidence you need to be a vintage motorcycle owner. The bikes they use on the course are typically small cc which is a good place to start. Ask a lot of questions about riding techniques and use the forums for mechanical advice. Bty, that's a nice 650.

It is best to kick start when cold, once warmed the electric foot is fine. The electric foot takes too much power from the system and once the battery goes down the starter engages poorly causing the teeth to strip.

I wish I had a kick start on my 11, that would be cool. All my dirt bikes are kick, but they also have decompression valves (but then again they are high compression).

Anybody ever kick over a xs11?

                          Nice bike DBS!

Btw, what is this electric foot you guys are talking about ? There's the kickstarter and the electric starter on the right handle. Google not answering my question either.

Think of it this way, you are kicking a 250 four times. How hard can it be?
The problem is, if the bike is not in tune, and you run the battery down, kick starting is not a sure fire solution, due to the poor tune. Tuned properly, it is almost as easy as pushing the button.

Only one can be at TDC a ta a time. I am guessing but, how can a multi cylinder engine kick back? i'd like to kick one over

It doesn't kick back, usually, unless it's flooded. Years ago I put an XS850 kicker on my '80G and I used it all the time to save the charging system and battery, especially on short distance start/stop hops. And to look cool when there were chicks watching. If the engine didn't start with one kick there was something wrong with the engine and whatever it was got adjusted, repaired, or replaced.

The engine I'm putting together now should be the same way.

                                .
