I am going to pick up this baby on Friday. I don't care if I have insurance or not, I'll drive around my private road (live in cottage area) and practicing my turns until the road test. This bike is prepping me for when the 1100 beast is ready

Motorcycle insurance in Ontario is a bit of a rip-off. You do not get a discount for a second bike, you pay full rate for both! I think you also pay based on the driver with the least experiance in the houshold.
Give Mantha Insurance a call (613-746-1450), they are in Ottawa. I use them and they are very good at explaining, plus they are not a call center so you get to talk to the same person every time. They had the best rate for my XS11.
That is a sweet XS650.

Whether we have M1 (written exam) or M2 (road exam) the price will be the same during first year. We can pay in monthly installments and that would cost 3% extra, or $45. Once we take an m2 exit training course, costs about $500, we lower our annual by $150 to $1,397.
After a year of driving, the insurance drops by about half, $836. And keeps dropping every year.
She warned me that any car tickets would affect our motorcycle insurance. Wth
Anyway, thanks for the leadFrame: 79 XS1100S

So just under $800 per person, that's not bad for Ontario, then it drops to just over $400 per person after a year. The key with motorcycle insurance in Ontario is that you have to be insured without a lull. As soon as you cancel your insurance for a year or two they make you pay a premium when you return.

So beginner rider in ontario canada:
Td: does not insure bikes older than 1984
Statefarm #1: i need to be licensed for 6 years
Statefarm#2: i need m2 before asking for a quote
Riders: $1,700 or $1,500 if I take safety course
Intact: broker Pbl: $1,700
Chieftan: waiting for quote
Mantha: same as riders
I'm as old as the bike, too!Last edited by Blank Slate; 08-05-2015, 06:33 PM.Frame: 79 XS1100S

Chieftan
I'm with chieftan and pay around $800 each for the SF & LH. Thats for full coverage though, fire, theft, collision, PLPD at 2 million.About the only thing not covered is sewer backup and air crashes. They are hard to get with though Pablo, they usually only insure us low risk, elderly drivers who have been at it for 40 years. Good luck though.mack

You guys are lucky. Unlike some of us, you do not live within the gravitational
field of the "Centre of the Universe" (aka Toronto) where the rates are 2 to 3 times higher. My $1200 gets the bares minimum coverage and only a few will even offer that on such old machines.

That's a very fine example of an early Special. They're great bikes. Unlike the XS1100, there are enough parts available for the XS650 to keep it running forever.
The first thing you need to do is pull the sump screen (oil pan) and check the sump screen. They are known to tear. It happens when you rev the engine before the oil gets warm. A torn screen can wreck that engine. Mike's XS or their Canadian branch, XS650 Parts Direct has an upgraded screen. Still, you don't want to twist the throttle until it warms up.

Edit nevermind you are talking oil filter
I was revving the bike and it died while idling. Then realized the choke was on the whole time. I'm not sharing that videoLast edited by Blank Slate; 08-08-2015, 11:31 AM.Frame: 79 XS1100S
