  • XJ 650 maxim J

While I've been waitying for my shoulder surgery, been working on this little maxim for an older guy. It has never run right since he bought it.
The cold compression numbers were 121, 118, 118 and 127. So checked his valve shims and only one was in spec so I pulled the cams to make changing them all easier. That whole cam chain guide and auto tensioner they used is a real mickey mouse set up.I haven't checked the compression again yet but will after I get the carbs done.
Anyway I have to do a full carb tear down to resolve a problem with the butterflys hanging open. On inspection it looks like there should be two springs on the #2 carb. I've never worked on Hitachi carbs before so I'm not sure if this is the case or not. The yamaha fisch diagram is useless.
Anyone know if a spring is missing or has someone just canabalized the wrong shaft parts from another set here?

        carbs

I took the day off today but I'll pull them apart tomorrow and post a picture of what I mean. At least if I get them off the rails then I can determine if they are all full of varnish or is it just one carb causing the sluggish action. Either way I'll clean them but it would be good to know which carb to look very closely at.

            Carb Kits

Richard, where did you get your carb kits. I just looked at Georges site and he doesn't have any. What jets come with the full kit? Also, what is the starting point for the idle mix screws? I would have checked the originals but someone was in there before me and put them back together without the o ring and metal washer and everything was tightened down all the way so any attempted measurement would have been worthless. Also, is there no washer on the float bowl drain screws?
Maybe one last question, do you have the yics tool required to turn the system off so you can properly sync the carbs? Where did you get it?

Actually everything cleaned up nicely. Didn't replace anything.
George has a carb float valve kit(no jets or pilot screws)with gasket.http://www.ebay.com/itm/4-XJ650-XJ70...8c0506&vxp=mtr
You can get them from Len(Chacal) on XJBikes.com. Just PM him. He's got everything in stock.

Years ago I made a YICS tool for an XJ turbo, I'll use it on this one also. I used the plans posted on this site to make it.
I want to say the pilots were out around 3turns when I pulled the plugs off them.

                      Hi Mack,
somewhere there is a diagram of how to make a YICS tool.
I put a copy in a safe place. So safe I can not find it

                        Cool

Got the spec,s to make one. I'll price it out and see if I can make one cheaper than buying one from a guy on the xj site. I have to order almost all the jets so shipping costs will apply anyway.
I will probably be doing all the work on this guy's bike. Long story but It needs a lot of TLC but it's a real cutie. I've made it safe and just got the valve train back into it. The carbs are in real bad shape but I'm making progress. Only 3 jets to drill out, but what was removed are garbage. Carbs are off the rails but the butterfly's on 2 &4 carbs are still sluggish so looks like the seals are shot or the shaft's are bent so I'm looking at a full teardown to make them right.
Thanx for the help people, as always.
One questio Phil. Is TC's fuse block slim enough to fit the original location on the xj? In for a penny , in for a pound if you know what i mean.

                          Hi Mack,
I had to remove the tool kit and the little tray it sits in to make the fuse block fit. I do recall I cracked the cover the first time I sat my fat arse on the seat so it is a tight fit
I would offer to take a picture but the XJ has a seized front brake and is jammed in behind some junk. I can climb over it if you realy want me to
Did you find the diagram for the YICS on here?
Can you post it as I have to make one. I have a couple of lengths of threaded rod...not sure what size they are or what size we need.

I installed one of the same fuse holders TC has. This one didn't have the tool kit though, so it fit right in.

                            Here is the YICS diagram:
