  • Xj750 rattle

Hi guys, I just traded for a 1983 xj750. I am still working the bugs out from the po. I still need to build a yics tool to finish the carbs, but my main concern at the moment is a top end rattle under load. at idle, there is no noise, and during decel no noise. I am thinking cam chain, but before I jump into that, I wanted to ask about the procedure for adjusting. It's a different setup than my xs11. The adjuster looks like it may have been swapped. It looks like a pic I found of an fj tensioner. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

The XJ750 has an ACCT (IIRC) so there is nothing for you to do to adjust. Check you valve clearances and check the play in the cam chain it may need to be replaced. The folks at XJBikes have a ton of information and are as passionate about their bikes as the folks here are.

Ok, so better just to get rid of it, and get something that doesn't need so much work. Thanks.

Sounds like the tensioner is stuck. There is a simple fix that doesn't even require removing any parts, just rotating the engine backwards to get the chain slack in the right place and snapping it back the right direction again, or something like that. Do some digging at XJbikes. Otherwise, you might have a cracked chain guide like my 650 Turbo had, which let the chain rub against the cam cover at certain rpms.
