Carb question (newbie)

Hi all, I'm new here, been following for a few weeks.. I have watched alot of videos about cleaning the carbs and my set has something I have never seen before and wondering if when I put everything back together if they go back... it some sort of plug.. I wonder if the previous owner bought a set of carbs new and didn't remove these?

Ok, if your carbs have a passageway between the two towers, it will need that rubber plug. No passage, no plug needed. Check all 4 carbs, previous owners may have switched one or more carb bodies over the years.

Thank you! I do see small passages, but trying to figure out how to remove that brass tube. I recall a youtube tutorial, but not confident in it unless i can screw it out lol

Hopefully this helps someone, the emulsion tube (if cruddy like mine) is easily removed if you put a heat gun on it for 5secs. bikerphil there is a passage way.

If you're asking about removing the emulsion tubes, I use this readily available but unorthodox tool...
After removing the main jet, lightly tap the emulsion tubes down and out. One tool should do all four.

Yes, then use the plugs in all 4. BTW, the carbs you have are the "transitional" type carbs, you probably have an early 1980 production model. They do have the plastic type floats right?

bikerphil Yes they do have plastic floats, and the needles were attached to the floats unlike some of the other I have seen, good to know the type, anything special / odd with transitional carbs? Or just a mix of parts, lol?

Not really, just the passageway/rubber plugs which were eliminated later in the year. Some of the super early types may have had brass floats. You will want to use the 23MM setting when checking the float level for your plastic floats. Check height at this point with bowl gasket removed.

They won't come out without splitting up the carb bank and removing the long choke rod. You will probably be ok without doing this. Just make sure the starter jet passages in each bowl are clear.

A follow up to bikerphil's post. Looking at the picture of the float bowel, put the spray tube of carb cleaner into the larger hole and spray. The spray should shoot out of the smaller hole. USE SAFETY GLASSES when doing this!
