As a California teacher, he's hard pressed to make a rally OUTSIDE of California. He HAS hosted a rally or three though. Ask motorman about LoHo. Motorman has been out here more than once, and enjoyed some nice rides and food because of that.

Understood. However, that raises another question. Is there school 12 months a year in Can'taffordya?

No, but what teachers get paid here is a crime. After all the schooling needed, the garbage man makes more money. So it's not about that, but what he and all the other good teachers are doing for the future of the USA.
Yeah, I do know a few teachers, some with 8 years of schooling, who can almost make house payments.
OK, off my soapbox....

Greg, the new you and the new me would never fight about that, we would both agree that synthetic in the XS1100 regardless of any other elements, is not needed because of the short oil change intervals necessitated by that hot running and bunky-shifting-with-old-oil air cooled engine.
My ZRX1200 (liquid cooled) goes around 5000 miles between changes with synthetic Mobil 1 10w40 4T or Mobil 1 20w50 VTwin and has no shifting fall off. I did a used oil analysis on the M1 10w40 4T I ran last summer and for the rally. Was still in-grade on the lower end of 40wt scale, had tons of active additive remaining (TBN was still 6.4) and metal wear numbers were normal across the board. I buy the stuff when Mobil has a rebate program and it ends up around six or seven bucks a quart. Mobil uses true synthetic esters as part/all of the base in that oil, and it shows by not having significant shearing which leads to poor shifting. Most Mobil car oils use base “synthetic” oils that are no more than highly refined/synthesized conventional oil molecules, thus permitted to be called synthetic.
I agree the synthetic is a superior lubricant and run it in both middle and final drives. However, it doesn't play well with the old clutch materials. Causes bad slippage. If the fiber discs have been replaced with a modern fiber material it works fine in the engine. I just like my clutch to work correctly. I'm funny that way.

My my 80 SG didn't have any trouble digesting synthetic, ran Castrol 4T 20w50 once or twice because I had some around that I had picked up for a good price. Otherwise it was conventional dino oil in the crankcase.
When I first got my first XS11 I ran Rotella 15-40 in it because that's what I had run in many other bikes without issue. I had HORRIBLE slippage issues and couldn't figure out why. Rotella is a synthetic blend.
I think it was trbig that told me that if I changed to straight dino oil with no additives it would fix it. It did.

Rotella T4 15w40 is definitely a 100% conventional dino oil and JASO motorcycle approved. Interesting that you have had problems with that dino oil and also synthetic oil. Not sure.. your bike must have a very picky stomach. Rotella T5 15w40 is a synthetic blend and has only come out in the last four or five years.
Possibly but even back in the olden days it had additives to keep those dirty diesel engines clean as possible.
We can argue this all day but I know the results of the change did.

No arguing here, it did what it did. Bummed that it happened and I’m glad it hasn’t happened on my end.
Typically calcium and magnesium are your main cleaning agents along with boron and sometimes titanium also doing anti-wear double duty.
I am leaning toward oil’s that have a higher boron content, that tends to add back some anti-wear in the valve train that the diminishing zinc levels don’t provide as well. Both Mobil1 motorcycle specific oils have a good amount of boron based on used oil analysis.

So funny! Web participation is near minimal and an OIL THREAD conjures up participation in a taboo subject.
