The gas from the '70's and early 80's is MUCH DIFFERENT than today. I had serial number 254, so I DO know what these will do. The problem is the fuel now has a LOT less BTU's because of the ethanol they put in it to keep it "clean". I was able to bring the front end up in all 5 gears, but now it's three, and that's a fight. Bikes STILL pull like a freight train, though.
The 850 final is a good mod IF you do a lot of highway riding. You will find you shift just a bit more, but it's worth it to some of us. First gear is a little higher, but it's still lower than my stupid BMW.

            850 FD mod...

I am looking into this mod for Molly... mainly because I drive 120 miles round trip to work and any cut down on her rev's is a bonus at this point in her life... 28,500 miles on her and I hope she has many more yet to share with me... looks like I have a little leak going on... goodgreif...

                    Hey again,

With ONLY 28K miles, it's barely broken in!! These things were engineered for 100K+ miles, a few folks have reported 200 IIRC.

These 11s will run forever at RPM. MPG is pretty much the same with either drive. You are not hurting it at speed. Will lose a bit of low end. Kinda sorta matters what type of roads you are on. If you are mostly flat tracking, the higher gear is ok. If you are riding twisties, you will benefit from the stock drive. The stock drive works well for all roads.

Welcome. Nice collection. Congrats on your newest acquisition.

My 1100 is an XJ. That is my particular addiction. I migrated from XS400 to XJ650 to XJ1100 over a period of some years.

My latest acquisition is a 2003 FJR1300. It was a shortcut to having a full bagger to ride this year. The XJ1100 is being overhauled in slow motion. It will eventually be a full bagger.

I was looking at the XJ1100 before I found Molly, not real sure why I didnt pick it up, as I recall there was a price difference and the XS fit my budget better. I do like the XJ fuel tanks, they seem to hold more fuel and look sweet as can be sitting on my up and coming bobbers (blkmax and slvmax)...

I enjoy both types of roadway, I guess thats why I have more than one bike, switch up as the desire warrants. I'll play with the bobbers first and let my junkie blood rule things from there... lol...

The 850's only have 5 gears also. The Final Drive ratio is taller on the 850s, so the driveshaft turns fewer rpms for the rear wheel to turn. The 1100's is slightly shorter, so it takes a little more rpms to make the rear wheel travel the same distance.

SO...putting the 850 Final Drive unit on the 1100 allows the crank to turn less rpms while still spinning the rear wheel fast enough to maintain the same road speed. The 850FDs are built better/stronger than the early 750s', and that's why they are preferred to perform the swap on our bikes.

People just say that putting the 850 FD on the 11 is LIKE getting a 6th gear because it lowers the rpms by ~4-500 at the same highway speed.

4-500 rpm is a considerable rev drop... I do like entertaining the thought... as a junkie naturally... lol...
