I had 6 at one time but now I'm down to 2 and a half...

All my bikes have been in storage for a few years. I'm really hoping I remembered to drain the carbs...

hello Tony... its wonderful to meet you... were all 6 of these xs1100 types? I am still learning about the F,FS,E, and the rest of the styles... the 6th one I just picked up is a 79 with the maxim style speedo/tach and it doesnt have the special tank, but I do know that it has the standard forks... I am not sure just what style it is though...

        Hey Rich,

We call that a FRANKENBIKE, a mix of parts from several models, but you want to use the VIN # on both engine and frame to verify it's heritage, but with axle end forks, sounds like a Standard that's been modded. Check if it has the 17" rear, then that will pretty much confirm it WAS a standard in the beginning.

no it has a 16" rear, tires are like new, the front is a wire wheel, like a heritage 650?, single cal with balanced up aluminum wheel, was told it cranks over... I have not much more till the overpass underchild makes it to the garage... red... thats about all I can share at present... and at present only the tank is set aside... rusted to max... they never closed it even after 25yrs..? goodgreif........ lol... its now my problem.... ($150.00) junkie in...

I was a Yamaha mechanic during the time when they had bikes sitting in the
crates for a few years. I can handle it but I'm still not thrilled about it...

I"m still not sure about bike #2. It only has 17k miles on it but it sat 10+ years in less than ideal storage. I have most of the parts to reassemble it but I'm not sure if I'm feeling up to it...

Another thing to consider is that the Special has a 1" shorter rear wheel, so you loose a few hundred rpms right there compared to the Standards 17" rear. SO...if you want to lower the rpms a little more, along with the 850 FD, you can also put on a Standard Rear wheel/tire. However, the Standard 17" has less variety of tire choices than the 16".

Now as to your friend, the Special running the 16" rear gave him better leverage to get the front end up, along with the extra passenger ballast in the rear at the rear tire provided additional leverage to bring the front end up.

Like Greg, I, too brought mine up to almost vertical during one of the 3 drag tune and time runs I did many years ago...had it revved to 5K and accidentally dumped the clutch too early, was able to hold on, but just barely, got it back down to earth safely. I'm running 4" extended forks on mine, and my rake/trail was reduced a couple of decades ago due to a front end collision that bent my frame/steering neck unbeknownst to me or the repair shop. SO the front end sits up a bit more to begin with, so it's easier for me to get it to wheelie than others. But that will changed once I complete my frame swap to an UNBENT frame.

BTW, here's an image of a skilled rider having some fun back in the 70's!

If you'll re-read T.C.'s post, he BROUGHT you up to speed on model type, yr., etc. and how to identify........right side frame neck for vin. and top right at top of engine case for motor vin. My bet without pics, it originally was a Special. As for motor year......as I stated, top of right side engine case near backside of starter motor.......C'mon buddy, I'm sure you can handle THAT.

My 1100 is an XJ. That is my particular addiction. I migrated from XS400 to XJ650 to XJ1100 over a period of some years.

My latest acquisition is a 2003 FJR1300. It was a shortcut to having a full bagger to ride this year. The XJ1100 is being overhauled in slow motion. It will eventually be a full bagger.

thanks Brother and I am sure that your neck of the woods is standing tall as well... so you found a fondness with the 1100... it is a giant...
